Interesting take here on O'Brien' s departure. I can understand his reasoning for bolting for the nfl, but the author makes an outstanding point about the kids in the program being the ones left holding the bag. It's getting to where it Isn't even worth it for a kid to ask a coach if they'll be there for the kid's entire college career. No point if you're just getting lied to.

Possibly, but they might go for someone with ties to the program this time around if they think enough time has passed since the scandal. Mike Munchak would make sense if he doesn't survive in Tennessee.
It's going to make the new hire a really tough call. Bringing back a guy with ties to the Paterno era would appease the fanbase but would also provide fodder for all the columnists and talking heads to talk about the Paterno scandal all over again just as casual sports fans were starting to forget. But hiring an outsider would likely mean another quick exit in 2-3 years. With all the sanctions and recruiting limitations they might have no choice but to hire a Paterno guy who wants to be there for the long haul.
Think about what Penn State fans are going through. They're used to having a stable coaching regime and now they get to feel the pain of college athletics as a business.....where their program is now being used as a stepping stone job. It has to be just a huge culture change there.
I always thought NFL jobs require more distractive BS, but I'm beginning to wonder.

In each of Kelly’s four seasons at Oregon, for instance, at least 29 days passed between the Ducks’ final regular-season game and their postseason bowl appearance, and recruiting is so essential to a college coach’s survival and success that Kelly couldn’t use that time to focus solely on Oregon’s opponent. He had to make sure the following season’s talent pool was replenished.
“You’ve got to recruit during the week, then come back and practice on the weekend,†Kelly said Wednesday. “We usually went Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then we gave our guys off Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. It was four-day-week-practice, three days off, four-day-week-practice, three days off. We could go on for a while on this one.â€
Kelly told a group of reporters in June that at Oregon he would set aside at least an hour each day to handle recruiting matters — sometimes four or five hours. And that was just when he was in Eugene. If he was traveling to recruit, his responsibilities might occupy eight to 10 hours of his day. The difference, now that he was with the Eagles, was too great to be measured.

disagree. Tennessee is flailing and Jacksonville is Jacksonville. With even average qb play and the return of injured starters (Cushing, Foster, Daniels, etc) they should be at least a 6 win team, and probably closer to 8-8.
Right on. Jacksonville came on the second half of this season and Gus Bradley has them on the right track but they're still a QB and a couple seasons away from being serious contenders in the South. Tennessee is a mess. The coach, QB and alleged frachise RB are all in flux. The Colts should be even better next year if Luck continues to improve and they can avoid the injury bug. But the Texans are talented enough that they can reverse course and be in the mix for a wild card berth next year. I'm not so sure about the return of Arian Foster, though. He's coming up on 30 years old, has a ton of mileage over the last 3-4 seasons, and the nagging injuries keep cropping up. I think his best case scenario next year is the lead back in a committee backfield. It'll be interesting to see what thye do with Ben Tate. He was the victim of some bad timing this year. Contract season and right when Foster got hurt and he got the opportunity to be the feature back, he cracked four ribs and spent the rest of the season trying to play through it.
I don't think it's really that close. I discussed this in the Fred to the NBA thread too, but one of the major pro's of taking a NFL or NBA job is all the recruiting and booster ******** just disappears. You're still going to have to work crazy hours and travel more, but you can devote much more of your time to game planning and coaching than having to try to convince teenagers where they should spend their next four years.
