I go because my wife likes to go. Lost the very close by theater to a more kid's oriented theater, loved that place as it was pretty cheap and generally not busy. Now we go to one with assigned seating and expensive snacks, etc.

Why don't we question people who clap or cheer at a bar or sitting at home watching a game on TV? The players can't hear you, the coaches can't hear you, so why do people do it?

Same reason some do it at the end of movies, because it is an emotion and expression of a feeling they have and want to express outwardly.

I don't do it, but if someone does, it isn't any more ridiculous than cheering at home during a game.

Guess I'm weird, but I like going to movies. I enjoy the communal experience of a group of strangers watching the same movie together. Watching a movie on TV by yourself or even with friends isn't quite the same.

That said, people can be jerks. I don't like packed theaters. I don't like when people come late and think it's okay to make other people move to accommodate them. And I really hate those cellphone screens lighting up during a movie - look, doofus, it's not just talking on your phone that annoys other people, that bright light while you're texting is just as rude.

As for applause, I don't do it at movies, but it doesn't bother me. I agree with the folks saying it's the younger crowd that does it most often. We saw Disney's Frozen over Christmas break, and those kids busted out into applause when the movie ended. No big whoop.

The only time I remember applause in a movie theater was when I went to an all day Indiana Jones marathon. Classic movies, and a theater full of fan boys. For the record, no applause after Crystal Skull.

Reserved seats with advanced purchase for the win.

But there was applause after Temple of Doom? Only way I'd applaud at that was if Kate Capshaw's annoying character would have gotten killed off. I might have stood up and cheered for that!

Ah, love movie theater pet peeve threads, so many good ones to list

It had been awhile since people clapped after a movie that I've attended, but I saw Lone Survivor last Saturday and that received a pretty loud applause towards the end in a packed movie theater. I agree that clapping is silly, but I can at least somewhat understand it after a movie like Lone Survivor or other war movies based on true stories, people just showing appreciation for the sacrifices they made, also a good chance when the theater is packed that there are several former or even active duty guys in attendance at a movie like that.

Some of my pet peeves...some that have already been mentioned

People who breathe loudly, drives me nuts

People who come and sit right next to you when the theater isn't crowded or packed and plenty of seats are available, always incredibly awkward and I get up and move every time. I seem to have awful luck with this at Jordan Creek.

The person who laughs uncontrollably at every little thing

Popcorn munchers and continual candy wrapper noise maker

People who talk through the entire movie like their having a casual conversation and answer their cell phones during a movie

Seat kickers

And if you're sick with a bad cold, PLEASE DO NOT go to a movie, no one wants to hear you cough 100+ times and constantly clear your throat over the next two hours.

Yup, one of these years I'm going to get myself an awesome home theater system. Despite all that, part of me still enjoys going to the theaters. Seeing a great comedy in a packed theater can make the movie even more enjoyable.
Holy ****, are you me?

Going to movies sucks because people are almost universally annoying. Fat *** mouth breathers, people who constantly talk to their friend about the movie, drink slurpers. $20 to listen to someone crinkle his jumbo package of Sour Patch Kids for 2 hours, no thanks.

If you look at clapping as offering a congrats to the film maker, actors, etc., yes, that would seem silly. Instead, I believe it is more of a symbolic way people that are experiencing the film together, acknowledge they enjoyed or appreciated what they just watched.

The only time I can remembering clapping was when I watched a very good politically based documentary and afterwards, many watching the filmed were moved by it and thus clapped. Almost like saying, "yes...this movie speaks to what we believe/have been thinking!"

Are you trying to make it seems less or more weird?

Neither. Just trying to clarify prospective.

Personally, I can recall people clapping and I'm like, "really?" Other times, like the example I provided, it made sense (at least to me)>

I honestly don't recall many times in my life where people have actually clapped after a movie .

I went to 4 movies in theaters in 2013. I watched 222 movies total. Personally, I would rather watch a movie by myself.

porn doesn't count unless you were moved to stand up and clap at the end in which case it was really good porn.

I think people clapping at the movies is weird.

I also think that the couple that showed up with full giant popcorns for the last 20 minutes of The Desolation of Smaug were weird.

Many people are weird and/or annoying. Theaters are apparently a great place to experience this.

It seems like clapping after a movie usually only happens on an opening weekend with a packed house for a film that has been eagerly anticipated, at least in my experience. I rarely go to see anything on opening weekends because I dislike the (clueless) crowds so much. I'll wait a week or two (or ten) before seeing something, if I see it in the theater at all. So I don't see much applause or late arrivals asking me to move anymore. Personally, I try to snag seats in the back row, center, so no one is behind me talking (my ears pick up every little sound from behind) or kicking my seat.

I only go to weekend matinees about a month after the movie is released, usually with at least a couple strong drinks under my belt.

Jesus. How about we just tell the Jews they can't come, either?

Wow. CF is full of anti-social bastards who live really unhappy lives, consumed by the actions of others which have no meaningful impact on them.

:kinda sorta jimlad:

OR people who know what makes them unhappy and therefore knows how to avoid irritating situations due to the other people's narcissism and ignorance.

1. I have never clapped at the end of a movie and I never will. The only time I have seen people clap is at a premiere. I think if it is a really really good movie, then go for it, but don't expect me to join in. I didn't mind people clapping at the new Hobbit movie, because it was brilliant. 2. Nope. Not giving up my seat. I get there early to find a seat that I want to sit in so I'm not giving it up.

We're vacationing in Tampa area and the following story was on the TV news recently. 71 year old retired policeman is at the movies (Lone Survivor). Guy next to him is texting during the previews. 71 year old guy complains to him, other guy throws bag of popcorn at him, 71 year old guy pulls out gun and shoots and kills other guy. Arrested for 2nd degree murder.

Clapping at the movie theater is weird. If you enjoyed the movie that much, talk to the people around you as you leave or the dude in the stall next to you in the bathroom after the show. Now, if the actors or production crew are on hand, have at it. I imagine that's a rarity though.

Clapped once at a premiere and the star, January Jones, was actually there. Cast took questions afterwards so it was appropriate.
