So with guy sounding like a no go...looks like Gooch and maybe Gray or Harvey are the most likely to round out the class. I ran Gooch and Gray on the Class Calculator and if we add both we would take a big jump (the scoring is so illogical for the rankings) to 34th nationally (right ahead of Nebraska and Mich State) and 5th in the big 12 (with some distance from the bottom 5)... I complain about the rankings so won't say it means more than we are moving up on a measuring stick albeit a crude one.

Really want Gooch bad. And Gray and Harvey would both be good too. Probably limited on schollies and will take either Gray or Harvey, whoever would commit. Watched Harvey's highlights and noticed he plays a lot of Special Teams. In addition to his LB position, he would really help us there.

Trust me I like both of these recruits, I just don't like how we have given up on the DT directive, with Jensen and Crick gone, this is the biggest hole in the defense, and without no additions we are looking pretty young and inexperienced in our 3 deep...

I think we probably recently signed our DT in Ayeni.

I was under the impression that Guy was visiting this weekend. I have not doubt that Ayeni can grow into that position, but he has some growing to do yet, some sites have him at 240-260, +20-30 lbs is what we need, to me I would rather see him as SSDE.... and a JUCO Rock signee, I know a lot of people have commented on Irving and Coe improving, and Cousin looking very strong that last few games, I know that Aka, the 2 RS Freshmen(Trent and Garcia) will get there but I think we still need a JUCO for depth, I know there was talk of Mitchell Meyer moving inside, but to me that is the same position as we are with Ayeni.....

I think finding good DTs this late is just tough. That's what schools like ISU have to do. I haven't seen anything that says we ever even offered Guy.

We do have quite a bit of youth at DT. THere's a pretty big gap in experience between Coe, Irving, and the rest of the crew. Cousin played more at the end of year, but it would have been nice to get at least one of our DT targets on board to help fill that gap.

I'm excited to see what the younger guys can do, but I'm keeping my expectations fairly low at this point.

Sounds like Guy was not extended an offer, so now he is not going to visit. Kind of reading into that, IMO we could be getting Gooch. And possibly Harvey or Gray. And the staff feels good about it. Still think it is a longshot with Gray. So I will go with Gooch and Harvey as my guess.

DT is not as bad as one might think. Look back to the days of Mac and Chizik and even the early days of Rhoads, we were in worse shape back then. And with Gooch and Harvey along with Harris and Seonbuchner, I like our LB group we are signing. Hope we get them.

Don't get me wrong he has made good strides to build depth, my bigger problem is where we could have been with Jensen and Crick, both played a lot last year and would have given us that extra experience to improve my feel good.

I didn't think he played much at all. Agree on Jensen though.

Not sure where people get this at. All that I've seen is comments that he could play either end--or the three technique in pass rushing situations. Which is the exact same thing as Pierson.

At about 6'3" or 6'4", 250-260, he really doesn't have the frame to back up Cousin at nose tackle, which looks like the biggest need. Or play in the middle on running downs.

Jensen hurts a bunch. But we are still better than we were a few years back.

Maybe there is more potential with our current young guys, but they certainly won't be better in 2014 than guys like tuba, leaders, or curvey.

Those 3 never played together at the same time. Leaders and Tuba NEVER played together. Tuba was a JC transfer and never started at the beginning of his Junior year. Tuba started the last nine games of his junior season which was Curvey's senior season. Tuba was okay his junior year, but blossomed as a senior. Kind of a late bloomer. The best of our DT's in the 2000's was during Leaders junior and senior years when he played alongside Curvey. But we really had little depth as I remember and those guys played the whole game. The Best DT's in Iowa State History that I remember were Mike Stensrud and Tom Randall when Earle Bruce was coach.

Bottom line is that ISU has always had some DT issues. Tough position to recruit and Iowa State has had a history of trying to take DE's and beef them up and make them DT's. Loss of Bevins and now Jensen has definitely hurt us and our development of our line. But I would rather take the best guy available if he is a LB or safety rather than just get another warm body for a DT. We already have some warm bodies which will work. And the coaching staff just doesn't seem to be that sold on Antonio Guy. Especially with other options on the table. Because if we offered I am confident we would have gotten him.
