I agree with her. There are some people out there that it is their human nature to sexually assault.

No kidding.....newsflash: There are good people in the world and there are bad people in the world. It's human nature. Some bad people go to college. I think she was being realistic and some people can't handle that. (also part of human nature)

But since it only applies to some people does that mean that it's really "human nature" which implies that it applies to all humans or at least all of one gender? (An honest question)

Some of you people think a little too highly of human nature... I think she was simply stating that there have been a lot of bad people in the past and there will continue to be bad people.

Sexual assault is not within our "human nature." That's why we criminalize it for goodness sakes.

I can see why she made the comment, between recent incidents, the Hok football fan in the port-a-potties, their football rape issue, Pierce Pierce, Pierre Pierce, etc., it just must seem common place to her at this point. Not sure it was wise to say it, and I think she is not a good college president, but for other reasons. Worried about Leath too but that is a whole other issue. Very worried about what the Regents' new study will recommend, but after the Pomerantz one, undoubtedly Mason will have less to worry about than Leath will; just hope he is up to the task.

While I believe Mason is a weak, weak president....and that the UI is a cesspool of liberalism, there is almost NOTHING said these days that doesn't "offend" someone. Outside the "People's Republic of Johnson County", most people read her comments and simply disagree. Inside the Republic, it's necessary to hold signs in front of a speaker and disrupt the event. It's all part of the show on campus.

I am offended by this comment, bro.

I will wait for an apology.

Semantics, Incyte. It may not be part of your nature, or mine, or most other folk, but it is part of some humans' nature (thinking processes and impulses). You could compare it to any number of other things that are part of "human nature" that don't apply to ALL humans.

Saying that we will always have these sorts of problems because it is human nature isn't accusing all humans of this behavior - or at least that's not the way I took it. I took it to mean that a segment of the human population is always going to think/act outside the norm in any behavior...including sexual assault.

While I'm not going to excuse the behavior of muggers, rapists, and assorted criminals, I do think that we have a responsibility to ourselves to not make it easy for them to target us (speaking as a woman here). That means I'm not going to go walking by myself through a rough neighborhood at three in the morning. I'm not going to leave my keys in my car with the motor running while I'm in the store for a half hour. I'm not going to leave my purse on my desk in full view when I'm in & out of my office. I'm not going to make myself an easy target if I can do things to prevent it.

Taking a **** anywhere I please isn't exactly unnatural, but that doesn't mean I won't get arrested if I drop a deuce in the middle of Court Avenue in DSM.

People are getting way too hung up on her misspeaking. Maybe it's not "human nature" per se, but she's not wrong in saying it's unrealistic to think we can eventually live in a society where there is no more rape. It's no different than any other crime. I mean, we've been at this for how many thousands of years, and we've still got plenty of crime? If there's progress being made, it's sure as hell slower than the speed of smell.

I think she's a terrible president, but I don't think she was necessarily wrong in this case.

I don't see any problem with what she said, and I don't think realistic people do either. Those who are offended by this need to take the comment in context.

I disagree, I think it is part of human nature, that's why we had to criminalize it.

I have a feeling that if you asked any scientists that deal with human evolution, you'd find it probably was part of human nature for the male to force himself on the females. Call me crazy, but I don't think there were a lot of cavemen who brought flowers and took the woman out to dinner before trying to pro-create with her.

I think it's also human nature to have compassion and care for other people. For most people, this is the dominating aspect of being human. For some though, the urge to copulate outweighs all others.

This is inching toward being banished to lesser-read sections of this website because some people cannot keep from flinging political insults around. Take it elsewhere, please, or knock it off entirely.

This. Her wording was poor, but she's right.

There's nothing wrong with a zero sexual assault goal. It's a good goal. She's just saying it ain't gonna happen because some people are scumbags.
