The whole first floor of the new building will be retail... No one seems to get that.

There will be as much if not more retail space in the brand new building than there was in the old dumps there.

This is a major improvement for Campustown. If you have been to literally any other major college town anywhere, their bar district is significantly better than ours. I bet even BYU has a better bar district.

Yeah, but what about the bars.....the ones the young football players hang out in....

1 block east will have 2 new 6 story buildings with retail on first floor and student housing above. Campustown is going to be incredibly better in the next few years. Obviously a few developers see untapped potential or they wouldnt invest millions in it. Makes matty goodman look like small fries.

You guys all prefer campustown remain a **** hole? At least Kingland is doing something. They are an Iowa company started by ISU grads and employ ISU students and they are expanding and thats a bad thing?

This part i would somewhat agree with.

Campustown needs massive redevelopment, my main problem with some proposals in the past is that they were given goals by ames officials to be more 'everyone' oriented. If they razed the entire block on the west side of welch and lincoln way and redeveloped it with an entertainment focus (bars and restaurants, maybe a theater or some other entertainment option), i think everyone would be better off.

I agree, they should close off Welch from Lincoln to at least Chamberlain starting at like 9:00pm on Thu/Fri/Sat.

So we can have riots every nice weekend? There's a reason they haven't turned that block into a pedestrian mall. It's to minimize congregations.

And for the folks complaining that the bars in Campustown suck, start your own. Most of those establishments were started by people who thought the same thing.

For those interested here are some renderings of the projects currently underway. Overall, the projects will add more retail than is currently there and increase the density in campustown as well as improve the asthetics.

There's a pretty good boom going on in campustown right now. There's the new dorm tower getting built on Lincoln Way too and a project coming soon by Kum and Go, along with other possible projects.

Was thinking more of "college town" in the sense of a small town that revolves around the campus, so not really Columbus. If you have been to Lawrence or Manhattan for example, both of their entertainment district areas blow Ames' away and it is not even close.

Manhattan's bar district is cleaner, but that's about the main difference.

Campustown looks like ****, but the bars are as good of a time as any other college town I've been to. Renovations are needed immediately, but this idea that it's just miles behind other places in terms of a good time confuses me.

I wish we had a Campustown similar to Aggieville in Manhattan. Had a blast when we were down there this past fall

I must be the only one who thought Aggieville was way too tame. It was a lot nicer than Campustown, but it wasn't any more fun, if that makes sense. It almost seemed too sterile at times.

That said, if Campustown could look like Aggieville and maintain the current/always attitude, we'd be really onto something.

Anything that makes Campustown look like less of a dump is a good thing.

I'd agree. I didn't go to Iowa State but I spent a summer in Ames when I was in college and had just as much fun going to the Welch bars as I've had anywhere else. But Welch does need a makeover.

A lot of you sound like the old bartender I met in Old Town Alexandria VA. "This place used to be cool, man. Just a bunch of artists who spent all day makin' music, and all night drinkin', smokin' dope and *******. The all these PEOPLE with, like, JOBS and **** started to move in and make the place nice. And now the houses are all nice and everybody's got families and goes to bed by 10PM and this place just like SUCKS, man!"

Riots seem to disregard the road being there when they happen, i dont think the road is preventing anything.

Riots seem to mostly happen when a party west of campustown gets broken up and everyone gets herded towards the bar area.

I am thankful Kingland is using their money they could have taken anywhere and are choosing to stay and improve the area.

I do wish Campustown was more like Aggieville. Basically, until about 8pm it is a shopping district with several restaurants for lunch/dinner, at night becomes more traditional bar district.

What would be awesome is if they made Welch Ave a pedestrian street from Lincoln Way to Pizza Pit

I've thought this a long time. Or at least bring it to the clock tower. Make it a pedestrian only street on weekend nights. Have bands play in the street when its nice out. Let people drink outside (but keep it to welch).....the extra revenue could easily pay for more security and needed help.

Boooo!!

Give me empty, cockroach infested T Galaxy building, random mostly empty vending machine rooms, and bars with standing water and floor drains for plumbing any day!
