You mean bottle conditioned beer? You're always going to have yeast. No way around it if you don't force carbonate. For home brewers: What do you guys use to filter your beer? Or what tips can you give? My buddy and I just got done with letting our bottles sit out, and it taste good, but there were yeast particles sitting on the bottom. It's a brown ale and isn't suppose to be unfiltered.
Bottle conditioning beer requires that there be active yeast left in the beer (which there pretty much always will be unless you've filtered it), and the bottle conditioning process will always result in yeast, and perhaps some proteins, settling out in the finished beer after the yeast have finished processing the priming sugar in the bottle. For home brewers: What do you guys use to filter your beer? Love spotted cow. My favorite part of our yearly trip to the Dells. I still wonder if the mystique would change a bit though if they ever went regional. Definitely one of the best summer sippers I've ever had though.
As stated before, store bottles upright, pour slowly and leave last 1/4" in the bottle. Save the yeast slurry in a glass. Make a bet... Loser drinks 12 bottles + of slurry. (Have fun in the bathroom).
In other news... Found Toppling Goliath in Hudson, WI. (apparently their biggest account). Did the drive over from MN (no beer or liquor on Sundays) and picked up two growlers. Drinking the 1492 right now and enjoying it.
I'm sure no one remembers my Brooklyn grocery store road rage incident (Bad drivers don't like it when you show them how bad they drive- He found me 6 blocks later at the grocery store and yelled that he'd "Meet me in the food aisles.")... Anyway, I now have a MN/WI version... Guy was driving slow (40 in a 65), I ignore it but notice he's swerving around a bit. Ignore it, pass him with no gesture or anything. Make a right turn and need to turn right again within the block so I slow down, signal, and get ready to turn. He proceeds to get up on my bumper and honk... So I got pissy and braked hard and made my turn into the lot. Mind you, I was going about 10 or 15 at this point as I was already turning. He of course follows me into the lot, gets out, and starts yelling and being pissy. Something about a tire iron, etc. My kids are in the car, so I figured I should just stay in the car, let him yell it out and be on his way, but then my wife got out leaving me no choice (more to protect the guy from her than her from him, she was ready for mama bear mode). Luckily she was calm, told the guy to calm down as we had kids in the car, and mentioned that maybe he shouldn't tailgate and honk aggressively when someone is turning into a lot... He kinda lost it (felt bad for his kid, not for his wife who clearly had been shown her place years ago as she sat there stoically.) Cops got called, he left about 30 seconds before they got there. Anyway, my daughter slept through it, and my son was a bit wide eyed and kept talking about the naughty man. They got police badge stickers from the police and we reported the license plate, but didn't press charges as he was smart enough to not directly threaten me (used hypotheticals) and no accident or actual violence. (I'd rather stay anonymous in this anyway since I don't really want to meet the guy again). All this, for two growlers of Toppling Goliath.
I bring a case down to Ames for myself every time I go home.Im a big believer in the law of exclusivity. I doubt New Glarus will ever distribute out of WI.
I was very pleased to walk into the tap room after my trail run Friday, and find 1492 back on tap.
We were in MSP this weekend, and I stopped and grabbed a pile of Surly. Haven't had it before. I'm pumped!
Good job out of you. What did you all pick up?
Oh the place I went to had four packs of the 16oz cans. I know I got Furious, Bender, CynicAle, and Hell. Pretty sure on that last one.
