Run Differential of +129. Next highest is San Francisco at +42. That's crazy.

According to espn.com, they have a 97.6% chance of making the postseason, next highest is San Fran at 78.8%

That's one of the most shocking stats I've heard in awhile.

They have an amazing run differential AND they lost 10-1 on Tuesday.

wish they would show more A's games on national tv, instead of the constant drone of Yankees and Red Sox

I'm not much of a baseball fan mostly because the Mariners have sucked. Can someone explain to me how they seem to be respectable this year? Is it just relief pitching as it appears to be? I mean, I know they got Cano but they don't have much more than that to speak of.

What's interesting is that this is becoming a banner year for them proving how batting average's significance is overstated. They don't have a single guy hitting above .290, and their team average is pretty pedestrian...but those guys get on base, they steal bases extremely well, and they've got clutch guys like Donaldson who can hit for power and drive in runs when it matters most.

On the other side of the equation, having a 1-2-3 punch of guys with sub-3.00 ERAs in your starting rotation is pretty nice, too.

In short, really good pitching (which they've had for a while), coupled with an offense that's much improved over the past few seasons (when it's been pitiful). Hernandez is obviously leagues above the rest of their rotation, but it's solid all the way through.

While you're correct in stating that the bullpen has been flat out amazing, the starting pitching has been a surprising strength, as well. Chris Young came out of nowhere as a free agent coming off an injury that kept him out for a year or so, and Roenis Elias made the rare jump from double-A to the MLB roster. Elias was a defector from Cuba, and we've seen lately with guys like Juse Abreu, that you have to treat players from Cuba on a whole different level than "regular" rookies.

The Cano signing was huge in ways more surprising than anything else. While he hasn't hit for the power that was expected, he has hit for a very high average (top 3 in the AL). His influence was also seen throughout Spring Training, as he was helping guys out in the batting cages with their approach and refinements to their swings.

But it's not just Cano; it's kind of the perfect storm of a lot of guys playing much better or improving to what their baseline will be while learning on the Major League level. 3B Kyle Seager is a stud. CF James Jones has been a revelation in the leadoff spot. C Mike Zunino is the guy who is the prime example of learning-on-the-fly, and he's bopped some huge homers of late. SS Brad Miller's batting average doesn't look like anything now, but when you take into account how awfully his season started and how well he's been hitting over the past 1 1/2 months, it's really not that bad.

It all adds up to a team playing surprisingly good baseball... And getting a little lucky along the way.

TL;DR: Starting pitching/bullpen have been surprisingly good, a lot of young players playing up to their potential.

Love the A's. Now if they could just win a playoff series.

Yeah that's the problem with them. They are built to win over the coarse of the season but not in the playoffs. They lose to the Tigers every year because they have to face Verlander twice and they cannot seem to score more than 1 run against him in the playoffs.

Yea, until they have success in the playoffs, it doesn't really matter. It's similar to rooting for the SJ Sharks. Lots of regular season success with a lot of postseason frustration. Let's go ChOakland!

For all the knocks on the Coliseum as a baseball venue, it's actually not that bad. I have been there four times in the last year and a half, sitting in different areas each time and the seats were decent in all cases. They're also 4-0 in the games I have attended. Guess I'd better get tickets to all their home play-off games this year if I want them to win. The best was the 1-0 walk-off win last year against Detroit when Sonny Gray was starting for Oaktown. The last was against the Nationals in May where Derek Norris had a 3 run homer in the 1st AND the 3rd inning against former A, Gio Gonzalez.

I forgot to mention that if the Mariners suck I have no problems with the A's. I really appreciate what they have done and do. Admittedly, part of that is based on a movie, but still.

Man, the A's blew it last night. They gave up a grand slam in the 9th inning at Detroit that allowed the Tigers to win 5-4. =( But I have to say that the Tigers-A's rivalry has grown to become quite entertaining over the last few seasons. Detroit seems to come out on top more often than not, but the games are usually pretty fun to watch. #GreenCollar

A's tend to beat them in the regular season but obviously the Tigers own them when it matters.

Samardzija had a good outing today in his Oakland debut, going 7 innings and allowing just a single run on 4 hits. The A's swept a 4-game series with Toronto for the first time in over 33 years.

Oakland is now 55-33, heading into the 4-game (2 home, 2 away) series with San Francisco, beginning Monday.I really hate/love the Bay Bridge series. These games are hard for me to watch because I want both teams to do well. Oakland needs to keep winning and the Giants need to get back on track. That being said, I will honestly be surprised if the A's don't win three of these games.
