Oklahoma Joes is great. I had a sandwich called the Z-Man I think and it was amazing. I also hear the burnt ends are really good. Just be prepared for a line

I lived in KC 6 or so years ok so I dont really know whats left. Joes of course is awesome. Bryants and Gates are an experience but not really good bbq. BBs which someone mentioned is good. There is a dude the that smokes outside of McGonigles Market that was pretty top notch. There is also a little place in kc called R & J BBQ. Its different more of a vinegar based sauce but it was one of my favorites. Also worth a try is Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs, MO. Its a good stop on the trip back to iowa or on the way since its off 35. Good luck there is a ton of good bbq in KC. Damn I miss good bbq.

Just my opinion, but you haven't lived until you've had the "burnt ends on bun" at Gates. It's like little charred chunks of heaven.

While Gates in general is not one of my favorites, the burnt ends on bun is my go to order there. Good stuff.

Side note, Anyone ever been out to see Sporting KC play? We will be heading there on Saturday for the game.

Good time, great atmosphere. Parking is free, but if you don't have a pass be sure to allow a little walking time. The last game I was at I ended up parking near the minor league baseball stadium and it was about a 15 minute walk to the park from there.

Thanks for the heads up! We can supposedly be admitted an hour and a half before kick with our tickets, so hopefully parking won't be too crazy

IMO, 1.) Oklahoma Joe's 2.) Jack Stack 3.) Gates

I never thought the words "Hi, may I help you?" could be so intimidating.

Gates is most definitely not Carolina BBQ, and is very much Kansas City BBQ.

Gates, Arthur Bryant's, Oklahoma Joe's, and Jack Stack are the big four. People like each for varying reasons, so I say try them all (and then some)!

Tomato based vs brown sugar based...

I have only been to OK Joe's and Jack Stack (multiple times each) but I thought Jack Stack was the better of the two. That said, they are both fantastic.

Have been to Jack Stack and Oklahoma Joe's. I would have to say I was disappointed with Jack Stack and OJ's was good but we were in line for two hours. We were only sitting for about 15-20 minutes once we got out meal. They have their service down to a science because there is always someplace to sit by the time you get through the line. I would recommend getting Oklahoma Joes's "To Go" if that's an option. Otherwise wait until about 9:30 pm to go.

I second Jack Stack and their cheesy corn bake. My wife got their rib-eye which was voted best steak in town. I've never seen my wife eat steak with 57 sauce until then.

BTW, just down the road from Kelly's is a burger joint called Flea Market. Best burger we ever ate.
