Actually, I've talked to multiple people from multiple frats and sororities that have told me their frats and sororities use old papers/exams to help prepare for classes.

While this can be beneficial if used to help understand how something works, I can assure you the majority don't use it for understanding, they use it to help them pass.

It makes me laugh whenever Greeks try and shove the "grades" point in a non-greeks face. Yes, statistically they have better grades than non-Greeks. But non-Greeks don't have the benefit of looking at other papers/exams to help them pass a class.

So yeah, sorry I'm more independent than you Greeks.

  • Nationally, 71% of all fraternity and sorority member graduate, while only 50% of non-members graduate. Because the partying is what makes them come back for all 4 years.
  • The All fraternity and sorority GPA is higher than the overall collegiate GPA. Cheaters
  • Since 1910, 85% of the Supreme Court Justices have been fraternity or sorority members. Eh. Good for you.
  • 85% of the Fortune 500 key executives are fraternity or sorority members. Yay mommy and daddy put them in the will
  • Of the nation's 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by fraternity or sorority members. Yay mommy and daddy handed their corporation down to their greek kid
  • 76% of Who's Who in America are fraternity or sorority members.Whats whos who? What?
  • All but two Presidents since 1825 have been fraternity or sorority members. Abraham Lincoln was in a frat, but didn't go to college. So, this point is pretty stupid. You can be in a frat and not go to school.
  • 70% of the U.S. Presidents' cabinet members since 1900 have been fraternity or sorority members.
76% of U.S. Senators are fraternity or sorority members. This explains why our government has been **** since then.
  • Both women appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court were sorority members. I'm not sure it's their sorority that helped them get in the Supreme Court, but their grit and determination through schooling and in their profession that got them there, but go ahead and take that pride, Greeks.
  • Over 85% of the student leaders on 730 campuses are members of Greek-letter organizations. I know way more organizations at Iowa State that aren't led by Greeks, but maybe thats because we have more clubs than most campuses
  • Less than 2% of average college student expenses go towards membership dues. Point? / It's still a lot of money
  • A study by the University of Missouri found that Greeks throughout the US and Canada are more involved on their campuses and rate their overall university experience better. A study from the University of Missouri, it has to be true. And of course they'd rate their experience better if they are partying 3x more than someone who studies instead of goes out and blacks out
  • The same study found that fraternity or sorority members are more involved in their communities; and give more generously to their alma maters. This is fine with me. I'll donate what I want, you donate what you want.
  • Fraternity or sorority members form the largest network of volunteers in the U.S.-Nationally, fraternity or sorority members volunteer approximately 10 million hours of community service annually. Well yeah, because they have to. So...congrats on being told you have to volunteer, while the non-greeks volunteer not because they are told to, but because they want to.
  • Fraternity or sorority membership strongly encourages within its community to uphold the ideals that they were founded on: sisterhood and brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, and becoming better citizens of society Ok this is stupid
  • Hazing is against National Fraternity or Sorority Headquarters policies.
Nationally, fraternity or sorority members are the largest and most visible value-based student organizations. LOL, right. Every sorority and frat does some sort of hazing. It may not be walk around in your underwear around campus and show the hottest girls your weiners, but something as simple as making guys walk around with a wooden board and making girls write their names and number on it to be accepted into a frat it hazing.

Your stereotypes are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Honestly, you've got a lot of bias with this questions one way or the other.

I had a very positive experience in a fraternity so I would recommend it, but I understand it isn't for everyone. I don't ever try and force my viewpoint nor do I try and look down upon those that chose different from me.

One poster earlier said he met his wife down the hall, which is great. I happened to meet my wife at a fraternity function. And neither of us were blacked out, I know it may come as a surprise.

You learn a lot about wikipedia in a frat, so there's always that.

I'm assuming this is in reference to the intelligence level of fraternity members, but off the top of my head of the guys I lived in a fraternity with there is two attorneys, a doctor, a scientist for Pioneer, two CPAs, a police officer, an engineer, and a teacher.

If you want your son to be a ********, put him in a frat.

If you want your son to think he's better than everyone else, put him in a frat.

If you want your son to hook up with girls that are blacked out, put him in a frat.

If you want your son to start riots with out of towners for Veishea but then be the first to act like he did nothing wrong and start raising money for the damage he and his buddies caused but act like he raised it all on his own from the good of his heart and swears he and his buddies had nothing to do with the rioting, put him in a frat.

If you want your son coming home and talking about how much he hates the Sigmas, but loves the Kappas, and he had his heart broken by a Tri Del, put him in a frat.

Whenever you have a large sample size you're bound to get a few people that have a certain sense of entitlement. Anybody involved in Greek life would be foolish to say that there aren't people like this. However, it sounds like you've spoken to and interacted with a very small portion of the ISU or larger Greek community. Some of the best student leaders, students, service leaders, etc. I have ever met have been a part of the Greek system. Not saying there aren't great students outside Greek life, just showing that there's a large amount of people that have flourished in Greek life.

Just to add, my house has test files and I have never seen anybody use them.

I would agree with this statement. You can come from Greek life and be successful. However, it doesn't guarantee success, which is how, from my experiences, Greeks feel.

If you want your son to grow up apparently always having an inferiority complex to men in frats, put him in the dorms.

Here comes all the Greek haters, it took longer than I expected. Some people on here hate Greeks more than Hawkeye fans.

I was also in a fraternity. I really enjoyed it. The 50+ guys made it easier to adapt to college life. There wasn't any real hazing in our fraternity. Shouldn't have to put up with it.

I thought it provided a great way of getting involved and also we had teams for about every intramural sport. Would not trade the experience for the dorms.

I think we need to know a little bit more about your son in order to give valid recommendations. I suggest you have him complete this questionnaire and share the results so we can offer better advice...

1) Tanning in January: yea, or nay?

2) On a scale of 1-10, how much do you enjoy the near-constant company of other men?

3) In the past three months, have you listened to Imagine Dragons and enjoyed it?

4) How many bottles of Axe body spray do you possess?

5) You're wearing pastel green shorts. Do you complete the ensemble with:
a. Boat shoes
b. Neon yellow wayferer sunglasses
c. Both a and b.
d. A long, hard think about the direction of your life
