Hold on....is my memory right? Was Shudak the kicker that got suspended or hurt during the Walden era before an Oklahoma game so we had to go for it on 4th down and go for 2 every time and ended up losing by a couple points?

Suspended. He mouthed off to an assistant coach during practice the week of the Oklahoma game.

ISU lost 43-40, and left about 11 points on the field because of not having a backup kicker that could make a PAT, let alone a 30-yd FG.

Ty was the first kicker I remembered as a kid. Had a game winning FG in a comeback against Rice (which included an onside kick recovery by Allen Lazard's dad Kevin) Also had 4 FG's in the upset of Nebraska in 1992

How good was Jamie Kohl when he kicked? I know he was in some NFL camps and has arguably the most prominent Kicking/Punting/LS/Holder camp in the country

Kohl was decent in college. 106/113 (.938) on PAT, 37/59 (.627) on FG.

22/30 (.733) inside 40 yards
14/23 (.609) from 40-49
1/6 from 50+

I remember the rumor that he used to practice by lining up dead straight on to aim to hit the upright at PAT distance. So basically he could kick it so accurately he could actual doink it off the vertical upright.

Kohl and Ty Stewart were both very good. The 90s was a good decade for ISU kickers.
Stewart was very good. He went through a period his junior or senior year where he was flat-out missing PATs (not blocked) and chip shots. It got in his head a little bit. He filled Shudak's shoes adequately but I would take Shudak over Stewart any day.

Kohl was a solid, reliable kicker. I would not put him in the same class as any of the aforementioned.

PAT
Shudak: 92/95 (.968)
Giffords: 85/89 (.955)

FG <30 yds
Shudak: 17/19 (.895)
Giffords: 14/18 (.778)

FG 30-39 yds
Shudak: 21/26 (.808)
Giffords: 14/21 (.667)

FG 40-49 yds
Shudak: 14/20 (.700)
Giffords: 12/20 (.600)

FG 50+ yds
Shudak: 6/14 (.429)
Giffords: 3/9 (.333)

Games with 3+ FG made
Shudak: 6
Giffords: 4

Adding...

First team all-conference:

Shudak: 3
Stewart: 2
Giffords: 1

Shudak would practice his accuracy by kicking from the end zone pylons. After achieving considerable success attempting the end zone angle kicks, any extra point or hash mark FG try seemed like a chip shot.
True

Also True

As noted above, he missed that OU game for mouthing off, but as I recall, he also missed a few games for injury... during his junior year perhaps???

I think this was 1990...it was a wind tunnel game late in the season, with a stiff wind blowing in from the north. Shudak had 5 FGs that game. ISU scored a TD to go ahead by one, but fumbled the 2-pt conversion and MU ran it back to take the lead back. Shudak kicked two more FGs to give ISU a 5-point lead. MU scored a TD with about a minute or two left but failed on a 2-pt conversion. ISU quickly moved down the field, and Shudak attempted a 35-40 yd FG with a few seconds left to win the game, into the wind. We were sitting right at the goal line. The ball got to the goal posts and the wind knocked it almost straight down. But it went over, and ISU got the win.

A win in that game would have made ISU 7-4, and with a win over OU, might have been enough to make a bowl back at that time...

These are the kind of threads I enjoy. Even if the good ole days weren't great it is still better to hear stories than freak out and call for current coaches head. Thanks for all the info/stories/stats guys.

In the 54 yarder he made the other night he had plenty to spare. Got a standing ovation from the Dowling crowd. All his kickoffs were well out the back of the endzone.

I REALLY hope we are looking at this kid. Got a buddy who has seen him play and says he is legit. He has a powerful leg and is going to end up being at a power 5 school, might as well be ISU!

One thing to point out: that 52 harder he made at dowling was during a game where he played both WR and OLB, which would make anyone dead tire. AND HE STILL HAS ROOM TO SPARE. Coaches should be all over this kid!

Jeff Shudak would practice FG accuracy by aiming at and hitting the goal post uprights - Truth.

Jeff Shudak was suspended because he was practicing kicks and an assistant defensive coach wanted to use that part of the field for his position group to practice. Assistant coach tried to pull rank and tell him to move along and Shudak told what he could do to himself - Rumor but that is what a remember and it was 23 years and a lot of Keystone at $5 a case later.

Jeff Shudak was a great college kicker but so was John "Perfect" Lee.

Hhhhhhaaaarrrriiissss... Hhhhaaaarrrriiiisssss.... Hhhhaaarrrriisssss......

Student section would chant the last name of a very good punter on a bad team as he stood on top of the players bench to watch the game - Truth.

I'm not old enough to know anybody before Yelk, so this thread is cool. I go to school with Ty Stewart's daughter and last year we tried looking up a bunch of his stats. There's not a ton of stuff online about college kickers in the early 90's (shocking, right?) and this thread by itself is way better than anything we could find. Pretty cool.

I played football with Jeff Shudak at Council Bluffs Saint Albert. He was hands down the best athlete at that school. He was also the toughest kid which is not something you think of when you think of kickers who were 5 feet 10 and weighed about 160 pounds. He kicked a 53 yard field goal in a game as a Freshman in high school. By the time he was a senior in high school he was approaching 60 yard field goals in practice (coaches never let him try one that long in a game). He also was a great baseball player (great home run hitter), very good point guard and a great soccer player. I also could never figure out why he didn't make it as a pro. If his son is kicking 52 yard field goals ISU really should look at offering him a scholarship.

The Caveman (Shudak) was also great at onside kicks. His son continuing in dads legacy at ISU would be a great story
