The defensive philosophy was different? You mean give up 41 instead of 50. Yeah i guess you are right. Btw we should trade user names.

Omg the people that defend the defense year in and year out are morons. Look how many points are scored on us every game. That includes fcs schools. Yet you defend this. Call people names for calling them out. Unreal. Its not bend dont break because we break everytime. Get a clue people. You cant give up that many points every game and defend it.

Are you really blaming the defense for the past 2 seasons? If the offense scores 38 points in each game this season, ISU is 5-2. Giving up a lot of points in the Big 12 will happen, but when you dont have an offense that can put up over 30, you are not going to win games.

Do you actually want to discuss defensive strategy, or just point out that the defense didn't play well today? Because everybody knows they didn't play well today.

Didn't see most of the first half, but listened to some of it on the radio. Did Wally start out blitzing and playing press coverage, or did he start doing that later in the game?

Blitzing seemed to be a pretty major part of the gameplan. We were frequently bringing pressure.

For the record, Strong said he was ready to kneel and play for overtime until they got the return they did. IM SO SICK OF NETTEN NOT KICKING IT INTO THE ENDZONE!

The last two games we've blitzed a LOT. Wally deserves credit for trying something new but the defense just isn't talented. There isn't a defensive scheme on earth that works without talent.

Am i the only one who saw them put 48 on the board. Look l like Wally also but we continue to be the big 12 worst defense every year.

This. I have no idea why Wally is thought of so well. Ever since he got absolutely punked by Tulsa in the second half of the Liberty Bowl, seems like he has lost it.

Fans hated Mess, but continually give Wally a break. Tonight was an absolute crapfest on D.

I've been saying this for years about Wally and people have continued to bury their heads in the sand. Knott and Klein were too good of a safety blanket.

Look at the team. Playmakers across the board on offense. Essentially a bare cupboard on defense. Our best CB is a true sophomore who was known for getting torched three plays in a row last season. Our other CB is Sam Richardson. Our LBs are slow or undersized (or both). Our two best DL left the team before the season started.

Not trying to pick on anyone specifically, just saying that #1 problem with this team as a whole is the talent level of the players, especially on defense. Putting our defensive players on the field against even an average Big 12 offense like Texas' results in 40+ points.

When have we EVER been good on defense? Bend but don't break is more of a reflection of the talent we can get versus the level of offensive talent we are facing. We will never get the athletes to play an aggressive in-your-face D.

Wally's a good DC. Everybody is going to have a poor gameplan now and then. Today was probably the first poor game he's called this season, and saying that if execution is a little bit better it wouldn't have mattered.

The talent on defense seem to continually decline. This isn't a Wally scheme problem. We have some very solid talent in some places and some major holes in others.

Sorry, but this is just another indictment of Wally. He and Paul have had SIX YEARS to develop a solid defensive strategy and good defensive players.

Anyone that says we just don't have the talent to compete on D is basically saying Paul and Wally suck at developing defensive talent.

Mangino has been here less than one year, and I can see strides we are making. Our defense continually sucks. Whether it is bend dont break by letting KSU march down the field before halftime with the exact same 8 yard out over and over, or this type of crap getting beat deep, it is all the same story.

I just don't get the love fest for Wally. Underperforming.

Out of every game in the Wally Burnham era, tonight was probably the LEAST "bend but don't break." Don't think OP watched the same game I did.

People are generally clueless when it comes to football.

I'd generally agree. We hid a lot of deficiencies behind some talent that we dont look like we're replacing anytime soon (knott, klein, etc). We've been a disaster on D since losing them.

We are slow, not as big, and just plain not as good. our d just doesnt allow to play anything else. I hate it too, and trust me when I say that, I'm Vikings fan. But they got a new coach and faster more athletic players, so it works. I know its the NFL, but It takes a certain type of talent and coach, that has experience, to change a whole scheme. Wally just cant throw out the book and start new.

I don't think Wally is really responsible for the talent we have brought in; that's the coaching staff as a whole recruiting and identifying players to recruit. Wally plays a role in that, sure, but it's not primarily on him IMO. The preparation and game day decisions of Wally have been fine - they just look worse than they are because of the players on the field. This team won't get to where we want them to go without a steep uptick in recruiting, plain and simple.
