They are seeing the speed of the college game first hand right now and will be better next year for it. They might not be here as many years but they will be better as sophomores than they would be as RSFr with no playing experience.
Because 1) if Morris has a serious injury then ISU has no true PG on their roster and 2) if Morris keeps progressing as he is, he'll be gone after his junior year and Custer will need some experience.I have been out of the loop a little but why aren't they red shirting? Its seems like a wasting a year of eligibility for two promising players if they are only going to play in garbage time when we are already down three players. But I hope Fred proves me wrong.
Anybody that thinks Custer's meaningful playing time is going to go up as the year goes on is completely wrong. Nader & Thomas come back, McKay moves Hogue to the 3 a bit more and Fred shortens up the rotation, if anything, as the year goes on.

You said need two capable pgs. I am guessing those that think Custer won't really be in the rotation would not disagree. The question is whether Custer is a capable pg this year. It is reasonable to have doubts on that.Nobody knows, but I bet you're wrong. Once they get into conference play they're going to need two capable point guards. Morris isn't going to play forty minutes a game, and while I trust some of the other guys (BDJ, Niang, Naz) to bring the ball up the floor here and there I wouldn't want any of them to do it for long stretches.

We got by without a pg in Year 2 and no back-up pg in Year 3. If Custer is not ready, he will not play and Fred will use match-ups fill the need.
I think it's starting to show Fred is planning on going to an 8 man rotation (Monte, Nader, BDJ, Hogue, Niang, Naz, Thomas, McKay) once McKay is eligible and Edozie and Custer will get spot minutes when needed
I agree that redshirting will be rare going forward, and certainly isn't an option for these two kids. However, I think SDW will play an important role before he's through.

Year two was an anomaly with Royce playing the role of primary ballhandler. Year three Bubu contributed around 10-15 minutes per game. There's a chance that maybe Custer gets nothing more than spot minutes this season but it's way too early to write him off. I just think that by season's end he'll have found his way enough to earn some minutes as Monte's primary backup. Time will tell.
Nah it will go up, just like Morris last year. Only difference is Custer won't get as many minutes, or start. But he will play more than he is now.
