Where is he going. He just got a lifetime contract to coach KU a place that he got his coaching start at. His job just got a lit easier, why would he leave? Slim chance Manning will be head coach there.

Easier the next couple years, but not after that. Self would have been pushed to any job openings had he lost to Davidson because as great of talent as he was bringing in, a LOT of Kansas fans wanted him gone for his early tourney upsets (like Kansas wasn't known for that before he got there). Success only breeds more expectations and he just bought himself a hell of a lot more of those. His job will be easier for a couple years, but no more than a couple before the wolves start howling if he slips back to anything less than Final Four finishes.

Self will listen to Pickens. I have heard that Pickens is ready to make him the highest paid coach in all of college sports (not just BB). Obviously, Self will have a decision to make. Don't kid yourself, if he goes to OSU they will be a perennial national contender in very short order. I do think that Self is a guy that could have success in the NBA...even though he has never been there. No way Danning Manning gets the KU job...they just simply will not hire anyone that has never been a successful head coach at another stop at this point in their program.

3 thoughts on this thread:

1. I don't know that I would ever say KU is " in trouble" when it comes to finding a coach. If Self leaves they will still get pick of the litter.

2. Danny Manning coaching KU may not be the worst thing in the world since he can't sem to win in Hilton.

3. Boone Pickens may seem like a very good thing for Okie St but mark my words he will also be the downfall of that athletic department. I realize that donors have influence on every AD, but, this is a donor on steroids. I also wonder what the other big money OSU donors think since now they are still giving but have little voice in any matter.

I think tonight just earned Bill a $3.8-4.0 million per year contract. Boone Pickens will pay top dollar....and that may push Lew Perkins to go a little farther in locking down Self down.

Net, Bill Self will be take over the "highest paid college coach" status from Billy Donovan AND a 10-year contract....

Self won't leave now that he won. He brought a national championship back to Kansas after a long drought (in the eyes of KU nation).

The good thing is that it is well known that OK St wants to make a push for Self. Self will now parlay that interest into a HUGE contract with Kansas. Kansas' boosters/administration will do anything to retain the guy who brought the championship back to KU.

Money can change people. It'll be interesting to see who throws it at Bill Self.

If T.Boone and OSU make a 4.0mil+ offer I think he has to take it. KU wont put up that kind of cash. I heard the recap of an interview with the KU AD on sunday and it doesn't sound like KU will get into a bidding war with any other schools for a head coach. They dont feel KU has to. They will make an offer to Self and he take and coach at KU or not. I believe if OSU is offering 4mil a year he will go. He stock is a high right now as it has ever been and the chance to be at his alma mater making 4 mil is an offer he cant refuse. Besides, what more does he have to prove at KU? He is gonna be losing a ton of talent off this team and if he is gonna build a dynasty, why not at OSU where he played?

I think alot of people are underestimating the lure of the Alma Mater. At the same time it is VERY difficult to switch in conference... Should be interesting to watch what goes down.

They should get B.J. Armstrong as coach. Oh, wait, I thought this was the Iowa Hawk thread, not Jayhawk thread...sorry.

It will be tough decision for Bill Self to make. KU with rich in basketball tradition and full fan support or OSU with bunch of money bags. If Bill Self leaves, I think KU will go after Rick Pitino or someone big.... NOT Danny Manning.

I don't think Self will go anywhere right now.Not after winning last night, and having a talented class incoming.

Firing Sutton after two seasons was a huge mistake. If OSU were to be paying Self $4 million a year, how long would they give him to win a Final Four? Two years? Four?

Can you imagine him going back to Allen Fieldhouse as the coach of OSU? You think they were pissed at Roy, that would be BRUTAL! Somehow I don't see this happening.

On ESPN Radio this morning they were saying that Self in an interview was responding to questions saying something to the effect that he thinks talks with the current AD will go well and put him in a position to not need to go to OSU. I think it was obvious that Self was saying that money talks.

Heard that too. It was Self clearly posturing for more cash.

Trust me, there is more to the NBA angle than you people think. Where is the new NBA team going to be located people?

from the way it sounds a lot of people are just dismissing the thought of billy returning home cause he is at a basketball rich school, its not like Okie State is chopped liver they have been to two final fours since 1995, and are also pretty rich in tradition themselves, why not leave? he's getting paid to go home!!
