Big 12 ExpansionReply

Just a heads up. The Big 12 expansion is almost a done deal. It would bring the six Western Wrestling Conference teams into the Big 12 for wrestling, effective next season, making a nice 10-team conference/qualifying tournament. It's a two-phase process. Two of the three phases are complete. The conference office feels very good about Phase 3 being accomplished. I believe it is the final approval by the university CEOs.
If this goes as planned, good news for Big 12 and college

Not the best option for Big 12

What western teams would join, and why do you think this is a bad deal or not the best option for the Big 12.

Utah valley, Air Force, Wyoming, northern Colorado and the Dakota states, both north and south. And I have no opinion other than lake bison might be happy about it.

They don't earn enough qualifers. Some weights got the champion in, but nobody in at that weight actually earned a bid.

In 2012, 17 allocations
In 2013, 16 allocations
In 2014, 15 allocations

I think the teams are NDSU, SDSU, Air Force, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley, and Wyoming

Just no power teams, but NDSU and SDSU are trying to get better and Northern Colorado just hired Nickerson, but only has 5 scholarship, I think

I was really hoping the ACC would have worked out. It would get us close to a qualifier like the Big 10 is.

But yes Big 12 had to do something and it is better than the Southern Conference

It probably is the best option if the Big XII/ACC thing is a no go. But it is a bad deal because none of those teams are very good at wrestling. The WWC qualifier doesn't have a single wrestler earn an a****id at multiple weight classes most years. The rumored Big XII/ACC deal would have rivaled the Big Ten for quality and depth. This is closer to the EIWA. But it is better than what the NCAA is doing to the conference this year.

ISU or Oklahoma State could probably beat an All Star lineup of the best WWC wrestler at each weight class. There are 12 wrestlers ranked in the WWC right now by Intermat, only 2 in the top ten.

Looking at the chart's breakdown, it looks like the Pac 12 is shut out of any nearby potential partners. Any chance the Big 12 and Pac 12 combine their tournaments or are they safe?

Like seeing NDSU and SDSU on board as well as maybe Air Force, but could do without the rest probably.

IIRC, Wyoming and Air Force are the only two in that group that has had kids reach AA status on a somewhat regular basis.

First I've heard about this. Not really an ideal situation in my mind, but we had to do something..

I was really hoping for an ACC/B12 merger.
