I thought WVU had a pretty hardcore following but I couldn't believe how many empty seats they had for KU on Monday. Unreal for a top 25 team playing a top 10.
East coast had to deal with the winter storm Monday night. I'm sure that played a huge role in the low attendance. 3 inches of snow in the mountains isn't the same as in Iowa

Sadly, I think some of it has to do with the fracturing of the old Big 8/12. Missouri's departure really hurt. Colorado, Nebraska, & aTm weren't traditionally strong basketball schools, but they were established rivals. West Virginia was a quality addition, but they and TCU brought nothing historically.

Still though, seeing ****-poor attendance from the southern teams should always keep the Big 12 Tourney in KC IMO. There should be ZERO talk about bringing it to Dallas/OKC because their fan bases struggle.

So I thought maybe ticket prices might be holding people back. So I went to their ticket website, season tickets don't appear to be overly expensive, then I went to look at ticketmaster, based on their seating graphic I would say 80-90% of the arena is sold for their WVU game on Saturday. But ticket prices aren't necessarily cheap for a single game.

I don't get why people aren't supporting it, makes me think the AD is not doing a very good job of marketing it. B12 basketball has never been better, way to many good teams not to being filling arenas.

In September 2009, OSU announced a contract extension for its basketball coach that in effect created a 10-year contract. Good through 2019. Escalating salary. All kinds of perks. No buyout for the university, and a stiff buyout ($3 million) for Ford, should he jump to another job.

Wait until Nash, Cobbins, and Forte are gone, woof, they are gonna be awful.

If you ask me, I think football probably has more to do with it than anything. The rising cost of attendance to football over the last 10 years has probably put most fans in a decision making mode. 10 years ago you could probably buy football and basketball season tickets for what it costs for just football now. Then add all the donation stipulations you have to do to get decent seats and I could see it being a tough sell. Hard to justify thousands of dollars to go see sports teams play.

That's an interesting thought. Could definitely have something to do with it.

Why do they hate Ford so much? I saw a mention in the reddit game thread about wanting him gone too.

He's brought in tons of talent and they are usually a solid team. Would they rather grab a mid-major coach and pull a McDermott?

I guess they are steamed about not winning more with NBA talent on the roster but would they rather have a guy who can't bring in NBA talent?

He had 3 NBA caliber players the last two years(the number most consider needed for a national title) but was mostly a non factor in the Big 12, and won zero NCAA tournament games.

If he can't win anything with that talent then why keep him? Bringing in top talent and not performing is a pretty volatile combo for coaches.

The only way I can see that changing is that he B12 would want a tourney "in its own State." (Even though we know KU rules Kansas City.)

But I agree it would be dumb to move it.

To my knowledge, that game took place during pretty adverse weather, which probably affected attendance

Hey, up until the renovation in 2000 the place only sat 6,000 people. So 7K for them last night was huge!

I do think a good part of OU/OSU attendance is the Thunder and the fact that they were competitive from day one with a top 3 player in the world on the team.

Oklahoma only has the same population as Iowa. If we suddenly had an NBA finals contender in Des Moines nearly selling out about 50 home games a year for high prices in a bigger building you'd see Hilton and Carver attendance take a hit.

I think if the Thunder are ever not good in OKC you'll see them become one of the NBA's weaker attendance teams and you'll see OU/OSU attendance go up when they are good as a cheaper option to cheer for a winner.

Yeah, I'd be careful what they wish for. Who are they going to bring in that will drastically improve them? Tough conference, obviously low fan support, not a big time basketball state. Having NBA caliber players is the only thing that makes the team interesting. If they bring in a mid-major coach who can't get NBA talent they will fall to TTU levels pretty quick.

Off on a slight tangent... it cracks me up that they have "Welcome to Historic Gallagher-Iba Arena" printed on the surround.

Guys, If you have to tell people it's historic... its not historic.

Totally agree. And it's ugly to have that wall right across the main viewing screen. Seems odd they would keep it when they redid the arena

Gregg Marshall would be a good hire but he might even turn it down.

Okie State players were walking around campus giving out free tickets too. Pretty sad to see what's happened to basketball attendance. I miss the Big 8 glory days where every fanbase except CU and kNU to a lessor extent cared about hoops.

That's a losers mentality, their history says they'll at least be decent regardless. Unless your TCU or TT you won't find a fanbase in the big 12 who is happy getting bounced out of the first round in their best seasons.
