Taking a look at our WR roster...it's pretty nuts. Most talent we have ever had. If Sam Richardson isn't a 3,000+ Yard passer this year I'm going to be pretty disappointed. Win or lose, this passing game needs and SHOULD make some crazy plays.

All starts with line play. ISU and Rhoads' future depend on how well the front 5 can play this year. It also depends on the injury bug.

This. If the offensive line is poor again, than prepare to be disappointed. If they are good then a great passing game is a possibility.

I'm sure Sam would love to have a lot less rushing yards and give the receivers a chance to get 3,000+ yards, but like the previous posters stated it all starts up front. If they can't give him the time to throw he will be running for his life and taking more hits. Which of course will cause him to become injured or he could get a bad case of road rash some where along the lines.

You aren't going out on much of a limb to say 3000 yards when he had almost 2700 and didn't play Kansas.

If the o-line is good too Mangino may run the ball more (with the running backs that is). That certainly could play a role in total yardage numbers. As long as the team is putting up points on the board I don't care. Really would be nice to have a good o-line though. Sam is a good enough quarterback he deserves it.

I want to be as optimistic as anyone on here, but the fact that there are already 4 OL out for the spring, it is hard to see the OL taking a huge step forward.

...still pretty average D1 receivers. Might be alright if there's time to throw and a running game.

I saw some blurb about Brunderage being a star....he's a decent player, but I was unaware of his stardom.

Back to basketball season...

I don't think the O-line should shoulder as much blame as they do. Sam shouldn't need all day back there.. he had time to throw consistently last season. These receivers need to step up to their potential this upcoming year and get open.

We don't need a whole playbook of slow developing pass plays. Slants, curls, outs, ins, verticals, bubbles, etc. are all routes that the line only needs to protect for about 2 seconds. We struggled at those last season too.

For the most part they gave Sam plenty of time to throw but they couldn't get anything established with the ground game at all. If we can get the backs to at least keep the defense honest then I believe Sam and the offense will look at least decent.

OP- this is not directed at you.
I think we could rewind the clock and find that CF has been saying this for about the last 7-8 years. We always think we have good receivers and our offensive line play will be improved (usually because of all the "experience") ............hoping it actually occurs this year.
Would love to have KO and Haughton on the line this year.

Is it wrong or too early to just want the football season to be over?

With all due respect, that idea ain't worth a velvet painting of a whale & a dolphin gettin it on...At MINIMUM, Bundrage & Lazard are above average.

The line may remain stodgy but MarkManGino will figure it out.

I think the WR corp has been talked up literally every year since I started at ISU in 2001 :twitcy:

That being said, I think this really is the year for them!

You guys really need to set your passing goal a little higher than just 3000 yards. OSU threw for 3149 yards and we only made a bowl by the skin of our teeth. I would think you'd shoot for something more like 3500 if you want to take the next step up.

Last year, Richardson threw for an average of 5.9 yards/attempt on 451 attempts. If he can raise his per attempt average to the 7.3 yards/attempt that Trevor Knight averaged in 2014 and throw just 25 more attempts, you could hit 3467 yards, and would have a much better chance of making a bowl.

How many seasons has a thread like this been started (and multiple times a season) from March thru August? Like, every damn single year.

And how many seasons has the WR group actually lived up to any shred of expectations? Nada.

A lot of that falls on the WR group and some of it falls on the offensive line and to an extend, QB play. I contend our QB play was good enough last year. Our line and WR play, was not.

You can obsess over the skill positions all you want. But until ISU starts winning in the trenches, ain't nothing good gonna happen.
