Iowa Machine Shed. I thought the one in Davenport was the one and only for a while.

And i when much younger would have thought the des moines one was the only one. Being next to living history farms it just seems like it could have been a restaurant named for its location.

Don't knock Pizza Hut pizza until you've had Paul Revere's. They were a chain back in the day - don't know if any of them are still around. Last one I knew about was in Mt. Pleasant, I think. Probably the worst excuse for a chain pizza ever.

I was in the same category as well. Not only is Machine Shed a chain, it's a chain among chains, as the parent company also owns Johnny's Italian Steakhouse, Thunder Bay Grille, and a restaurant at the Iowa 80 truck stop called Gramma's Kitchen.

And I had no clue until 5 minutes ago that Pizza Pit was a chain.

As far as Paul Revere's Pizza, at least the one in Eldridge is now known as Nickelberry's. Paul Revere's Pizza was actually really good for the price point (less expensive than Pizza Hut and tasted better). When Nickelberry's took over, well, that was some bad pizza.

It looks like Pizza Pit dominates pizza in Madison WI with five locations...which is weird because I've been to Madison 3 times and not noticed it. Count me in the crew that thought it was Ames only, didn't even know Iowa City.

My guess is that Johnny Dognuts is the owner of Pizza Pit since he's mostly a Wisconsin fan but also huge ISU fan and has encyclopedia like knowledge of Iowa's benchwarmer players. Their locations fit that exactly being mostly around Madison but with Ames/Iowa City tacked on.

Taco Tico. The one in Fort Dodge was a favorite stop. Come to find out there are quite a few. Especially around Oklahoma City.

DaVincis. I knew it was a Nebraska chain, but count me as another person who miss them.

Cheese steak hoagie. Extra cheese. Extra meat. With the cheese cooked right into the meat.

It took me a long time to realize that Sub City isn't just some dumpy sub place on 1st Ave in CR. In fact, I didn't realize it until 3 years ago.

Im just learning from this thread that Pizza Pit is a chain. Though the one in ames looks like it was one of the originals that opened in 1969. Wonder what the story with that is, given most of their locations since have been in Wisconsin (not sure when the Iowa City one opened)

There was a Pizza Pit in Ankeny until about 1999 or so.

Now we will see who remembers the main competitor of McDonalds (opened in San Bernandino where I lived for awhile)according to my Dad.

He said the original 15 cent hamburger patty had a hole in the middle like a freddys.

Henry's was the ONLY fast food place in Muscatine in the 1960's until Sandy's finally opened up about 1968 or so. They were not good but it was the only one.
