It's time to boot Fort Dodge, Ottumwa, and Mason City (And possibly Marshalltown) from DSM Metro affiliation in all sports boys and girls. DCG, Norwalk, and a split Waukee will be able to fill those spots soon enough.

When I graduated Urbandale was 42, now 31. Surprised they are growing, always had heard we we're landlocked as a district.

Theres some discussion about using a multiplier for kids using free and reduced lunches to possibly match schools up more by income than actual numbers. Not sure that would really change a ton of things as I think there are a lot more kids that qualify for that than don't.
Talk of counting those that qualify as half or even not at all. Might change the numbers but I really don't think it would change the overall order of school size...much anyway

I understand the thought process behind this but it still seems weird. Maybe you could count them as 3/5.

I would have never guessed that Johnston is so much larger than Urbandale. How does that happen when Johnston has under half the population?

It would be nice to see % increase for each school.

Johnston's new HS is basically in Grimes I think their district must stretch pretty far.

Has West Des Moines ever considered adding a 2nd high school?

They decided to add Valley Southwoods, the 9th grade school, instead of splitting the high school. They have also done a ton of work on the actual high school over the last 10 years to accomodate the large amounts of kids. From what I've been told, I wouldn't recognize a thing from when I was in school there 10 years ago.

School district boundaries not matching city boundaries. Same reason Waukee is so big, it includes large chunks of WDM, Clive, Urbandale

So I pay taxes for those grimes kids! Let those hood rats on the west side of 141 go to DCG.

That's going to be a weird dynamic when DCG goes up to 4/5A. You can probably see the new JHS from the roof of DCG and vice versa. There will be kids in Grimes on the west side of 141 that could walk to JHS in 2 minutes but will have to drive 10 minutes to get to DCG.

About 15 years ago before they built Valley Southwoods. They probably should have built a 2nd high school based on how much their renovations just cost.

I graduated in 1994 and our high school (9-12) had over 200. The school consists of the same towns today and it is now under 140. A difference of 60 people may not seem like much, but it's 30%. It would be interesting to see the small town differential from over the years.
