Official 2015 Hoiberg NBA Speculation Thread

My opinions (not statements of fact)-

With the new TV money starting next year, there will be a lot of eye popping salaries for NBA coaches coming.

Hard for a mid-level P5 conference budget to compete with NBA money.

I will be disappointed if he leaves, but you can't argue he is leaving ISU MBB in a much better place than when he came.

I don't know TJ at all or how good a head coach he would make, but I do know JP fairly well and I will be shocked if he hires a head coach that is only about 30 and has no head coaching experience. Look at the other coaches in the Big 12 and think about TJ learning how to be a head coach against them 18 games a year. TJ could be great, but I do not believe he is even close to Fred's level at this time.

If things change, I hope we find a coach with Fred's love of a fast pace NBA style mismatched based offense, and a good teacher of defense and rebounding as part of his staff.

I do not understand how someone that just went through open heart surgery wants to jump into the NBA pressure cooker at this point.

I really appreciate Cyclone Fanatic, but some of the stuff going on since we lost to UAB is really bad.

True, but he hadn't coached before ISU, and being an assistant GM in Minnesoata is quite different than being the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, and coaching 90 gms plus when you figure pre season....add into that the fishbowl national media Chicago operates in, and the guys on that team, and I standby my thoughts....

You are nuts. A former player and assistant GM knows exactly what he is "having to deal with".

I get it we all want Fred to stay, but some of you are really grasping. Fred is an NBA guy. That is as good as it gets for a life centered on basketball.

So instead of making an offer of 2.8 million to CFH we should just expect him to come back and get paid at a below average rate in the Big 12 conference. At some point Pollard is going to have to answer for his decisions. Chizek, Rhoads, McDermott and the potential hiring of a kid with no head coaching experience to take over a Top 10 squad.

It is a complete joke that we have been hearing how important chemistry is with the potential transfer players but nobody is concerned about the chemistry of the coaching staff. You hire a person with no experience to lead people that are frankly just as qualified. Honestly this season has the potential to ruin what Fred had built over the last 4 years given that 2016-17 appears to be shaping up to be like it was under McDermott.

Mayor (and his agent) just agreed to this contract last year if memory serves. Mayor agreed to the terms; probably less than he could have got with a larger NBA buyout. But once again this isn't about the money, it's about the NBA

Ehh, he's got front office experience. If he truly didn't like the college game, he'll have plenty of options after the bulls.

It appears that ISU was a dream job until he could get the NBA job he wanted. I realize going to the NBA was his real dream job but it sure takes away from his statements on what he wanted to do at ISU. Once he can get his NBA job ISU no longer is a dream job. ISU will not be next year what it could be if Hoiberg had stayed.

you are probably right. ...I have been very close to the NBA gm over the last 10 to years and know how the majority of the players view things.....it's so different than what happens at ISU.....I guess I have a hard time thinking someone who is universally loved and a true teacher would want to deal with that BS....but Fred must see things differently for whatever reason....and that is His prerogative

I think Fred, and quite a few other coaches, would have done pretty well (NCAA tourneyish) with the personnel that came to ISU from 2006-10. There were some good players.

That's one silver lining; a coach CAN go to Ames, IA and recruit and be successful even after lean years. It's happened before, and could be happening again if Hoiberg bolts.

Since he doesn't have an extensive track record, if he's not successful fairly quick I could see Hoiberg getting shuttled into the Offensive-assistant role. That's pretty much what Gentry is now, right? If Monty Williams just got canned for not having good enough defense...

Not sure what NBA assistants make these days, but I'd put the probability of Fred ever being an assistant at zero.

Fred's playing field is a lot more even in the NBA. He was at a recruiting disadvantage here, and typically had to play small because we couldn't get the Bigs. He will have those at his disposal in the NBA.

I can defiantly see why he wants to go, several reasons actually. But I still think he stays at minimum one more year, if not longer.

Ames IA isn't what recruits came here for.

Jackson was the king of riding a superstars coat tails.

There is plenty of glory and $$$ available in the NBA. I am not a huge fan but the $$ are flowing in from somewhere.

I don't agree, but respect is how you feel about someone. If one held Fred in a very very high regard and one feels slighted by the action it is reasonable to lose a little
respect. My wife said the same thing so did a lot of people. People would still love Fred but he wouldn't be loved the same way. It would crush the collectI've spirit of ames. It will. He knows it too and it's a bad move. If one chooses to lose some respeCT for a guy who are you to tell them how they should feel? People are going to feel hurt and betrayed on a large scale. Fred is Ames, he is ISU more than any single person perhaps in our history; he's the Mayor. Him leaving us will be a blow of the largest proportions. Get ready for this to be a mild reaction, should he leave.
