Way up there
The "we hate Fred" crowd is a very vocal small minority, I'm quite certain of that.

And they don't hate Fred, they are just sad. You young immature people lash out when their feelings get hurt all the time. In a way, the "Fred haters" are the biggest Fred lovers of all.

That's why buyouts are put into contracts, and the buyout if he left for the NBA is significantly less than for another college team. If that wasn't writing on the wall then I don't know what was, and ISU agreed to it.

If.he does.come back, that needs to change. ISU needs a long term commitment or he is probably just better off going now.

Those buyout clauses in contracts are essentially useless. No "desirable" coach is going to sign a contract that contains a buyout clause that meaningfully restricts a move that said coach might really desire to make.

I do fully agree with your last sentence.

I don't think anyone hates Fred.

He has not officially announced he is leaving so maybe a thread of hope is keeping the mob at bay.

But there is some venom being spewed already, if he does leave, you will see people say things like don't let the door hit you on the way out, and that is probably one of the more mellow replies.

For some it will be like a bad divorce, and they will hate him.

Semi-Jimlad question but if Hoiberg to the Bulls is a "done deal", will ISU have a higher number of former players currently playing in the NBA or former players currently coaching in the NBA. Who was on active rosters at the end of the year, Diante and Chris?

If Fred does leave, I think its to follow his dream. I would be disappointed but not angry. You can't fault someone for making the most of their god-given talent. As much as I love ISU, ISU is not the NBA.

If he left just for more money, I would be furious. Then I would see CFH as a sellout. But I really don't think its the money.

Well, ISU may have 100,000 fans or more and 50 of them might say something mean. These are people, some not that smart, and many are going to be hurt.

There will be a sense of betrayal if he bolts and that does make some sense really. This guy is a home grown hero in Ames and is beloved by the fan base. It would be easy for ISU fans to feel betrayed because they are the most loyal fans in the country win or lose (although losing stinks and fans aren't afraid to voice their frustration). It will be hard for some to accept Hoiberg bailing on ISU... a place that allegedly means so much to him and his family.

What will be saying about the commitment of contracts if we have another 2-10 campaign in football this fall?

Oh don't get me wrong... he will always be the Mayor, he will always be an Ames hero, he will always be the guy that brought ISU basketball back from the brink of extinction.... but he will also be the guy that made ISU fans believe and then turned his back on them. If he goes to the NBA Fred Hoiberg will just be another guy that came to Iowa State and left when his time playing was done, just another coach that was in Ames for a few years and left, and that is it... nothing more and nothing less.

I despise the NBA but I would gain a new interest in the game and that would be rooting for whatever franchise takes Hoiberg to fail and fail in the worst possible way. It's just the way it is. If your wife cheats on you and bails you don't root for her to have success... you hope karma makes her life a living hell from now until eternity. Not much different then this scenario facing Iowa State right now.

This is the response of an irrational, perspectiveless fanatic. Most more casual fans will not be rooting for Fred to fail, or think he turned his back on them, or view it as a cheating spouse. That's really just ******* ridiculous.

Safe to say it isn't for the money. Fans don't have the appreciation for the nba because of "lack of defense" or not a professional team in Iowa... Fred has a different appreciation for the nba that I've accepted and completely understand. Just sucks because do you want to be the best of the best in the NBA or make a dynasty at home. Tough call. But it isn't for the money.

The guy just signed a 10 year deal last year... Thanks for the extra cash JP... I'm out.

Oh bawbie... get over it. I like Fred, I think he is a good coach, and a good guy. Will I be ****** if he bails on ISU and his players? You bet your *** I will be.

For the record... the NBA sucks. The season is too long, the games are boring, the overall product is average, there is no loyalty shown by coaches or players, and quite frankly there is an overall lack of passion involved. It's an inferior product to college hoops. Sure the players are more skilled but like anything else when you reach the highest peak in your profession and you can't go any higher it's just playing for a paycheck and the passion is gone. Remember... it's just a business at that point.

Really? People here aren't moving jobs that pays x2 what they're currently making for effectively the same job?

this does not square with your previous post stating you hope his will fail and comparing him to a cheating spouse.

I would wager you will see 50 on this board alone. But it goes with the territory of the job, coach a team, marry the fans.
