Did you ever meet Wayne Morgan? He was nice to a fault and was an assistant on some very, very good Syracuse teams. And yet most here say he couldn't coach a lick? So why should any here think that TJ could do better with his resume? Because he is a nice good ol boy who just loves ISU and is JP's buddy? Please....................see football.

So all assistant coaches are the same? Also, comparing Paul Rhoads to TJ? Really? That's not even the same sport. How is that in any way relevant?

You could point out a comparison to ANY coach we could potentially hire and make it look bad.

Coaches that want to be here have not turned out to be the best thing. (Unless Fred professes his undying love for ISU). I want a coach that wins and builds this program into a national power. If he leaves, I want the next one to continue the tradition.

Agreed, however the "coach who wants to be here" criteria should have some consideration. ISU (as a whole) is considered a challenge for any coach. The main thing is to gauge the flight-risk of a coach when they have any success at ISU before being tempted away.

TJ is not going to be the next HC folks. TJ is a recruiter and replaced Matt A. TJ wouldn't be here if Mullin weren't hired at SJ. TJ will be retained though. Just look at JPs recent comments on the difference of the program today compared with just 5 years ago..night and day. JP has some money to throw around as well (Ty new TV deal and no it's not going toward the new SEZ we are repaying that at almost no interest over 20 years). JP has a top 10 roster, A TOP 15 program and sell out crowds every night..to sell to a lot of prospective coaches..big 12..ESPN every game..etc.. If you think ISU can't attract a decent replacement then I can't help u and after all the said if u think it's going to be a guy who has zero HC experience you will be surprised then. Heck Mann is more qualified..he's been with Fred longer and is more involved with game prep than TJ has been.

Okay, but most people know that's not typical here.

Why would someone, who has proven themselves a winner, risk coming to ISU and failing in Hoiberg's foot steps.

Why not give TJ a chance? Do you honestly think that Iowa State is the place for top successful coaches come and end their career?

You want a coach that wants to be here, not the coach that wants to use Iowa State as a stepping stone.

How well has that worked out? McD, Paul, now maybe Fred.

Why? So we should hire a less talented coach because we think the more talented coach will leave after he has success? Thats a dumb idea.

Based on that logic, we never should have hired Fred. I wouldn't trade the last 5 years for anything no matter when or how it ends.

Only if the new coach wants him retained - or else our pool of candidates would be dramatically reduced. No HC worth his salt is going to have the AD tell him who one of his assistants will be.

No but it's very common to be asked to give a coach a chance, especially if there is still a contract in place. But normally the decision still is ultimately up to the coach.

Competely untrue. It is well known when Fred was hired that TJ was to be retained on staff, now Fred probably wanted him any way but you are wrong if u think JP can't request a coach staying. Happens more than u think. Our pool would not be dramatically reduced. TJ has become a well known top notch recruiter. U think any Mid Major coach is going to have any problem keeping TJ? Umm no. It's rare for a Mid a Major coach to take over a higher level program and bring over his entire previous staff.

Is Hoiberg gone yet? I've heard shockingly little about something that seems close to a done deal.

He's just waiting for all of us to go through the steps before he makes it official. It's obviously :jimlad: a done deal but some Clones are still stuck in denial.

I like how people think winning coaches are just available. If they are so good why aren't they with a team? Oh go for a lower level winning coach? Like McDermot?

Yeah there's risk in that way too, not just in 1st time guys.
