Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

No

I went to ISU during the Stevens, Hornacek, Grayer years- so those guys are Cyclone basketball to me. Along with Johnny Orr being the godfather. I lived out of state when Fred was in HS and at ISU, so I don't have the same memories of his playing days.

I now live back in Iowa and have been a season ticketholder during the McDermott and Hoiberg years and Freds legacy will always be great memories in Hilton, 2 Big 12 titles and a few NCAA Tournament wins.

Fred's decision to move on from ISU is his decision. He is choosing what he wants to do for his career and the life he provides for his family. I can only hope the best in whatever the future brings Fred.

I also trust Jamie Pollard and feel he bleeds Cardinal and Gold- more so than 99.9% of Cyclone fans. Whoever he chooses to be our next coach, will be the guy who he feels is best for the job. He also is the guy who isn't making decisions in a vacuum. The Cyclone AD doesn't have a printing press in the basement of the Jacobson Building- so budget matter are a consideration

Of course it does. Part of it is on us, putting him on too high a pedestal. He's not a immortal lifelong coach to take us to the promised land. He dida helluva good job bringing ISU from rags to riches. We are 1000% better off than when he he came.

But ISU was just a stop on his career trajectory. Like every other coach in the NCAA. It's how the business works. And we should have realized that from day 1.

I'm not sure about other fanatics but I grew up watching Fred and following his career. I had his jersey and wore it all the time. Twitter is buzzing tonight and seems like there could be fall out to his legacy with the way this whole offseason has played out. I'm interested on how this will play out to the fans and how this affects the "mayor" status. I guess time heals all wounds but the initial reaction has been about what is expected.

He'll be the guy who made a lot of promises and said a lot of things people wanted to hear, only to dump Iowa State (a top ten team) after a loss to UAB.

Couldn't care less what he does in the NBA. Could've made ISU a big time program, but nope. Guess he'd rather coach the Magic.

Hell this jump to the NBA could grow his legacy. Success on the biggest stage would bring additional fans to the House of Hoiberg. He could be a national or even international personality.

Sadly he'll remain Benedict Hoiberg to far too many of the Cyclone faithful

I was more upset when Cael left. Cael leaving came as a complete surprise, whereas I always figured Fred's departure was inevitable. But hey, it's great to see ISU grads move to the top of their professions.

It completely changes his legacy for me, and that's not to say that I think he did something wrong. He just isn't what I thought he was and he values different things than I thought he did.

He's an extremely talented basketball coach and probably (I've never met him personally) a really good guy. I'm thankful for all the good times he gave us fans. Some moments of pride and excitement I'll never forget, but he decided to leave on the cusp of maybe the biggest season in school history. You don't get to do that, and still be called The Mayor.

Reading these posts it seems like Fred sold Hilton to British and spat on Johhny's statue as he's walking out the door.

I guess the conference realignment fiasco wasn't enough to show people that college athletics are a business. Nothing more.

Maybe something needed to happen in their back yard to finally see the world for what it is

People had bball visions of sugar plums and national media exposure for next 20 years. The fball program could simmer at 2-3 wins. People would be happy. Now we are being thrown back into the maelstrom. A storm is coming.

Not knowing the whole picture, I am happy with what Fred gave to Iowa State, but this does not seem right with the way he is leaving. If he is leaving.

Yep, absolutely changes it. A solid kick to the stones of the ISU bball program delivered by the one we called "The Mayor".

Fred will still always be "The Mayor" and have a unique legacy at ISU that we probably will not see again in our lifetime: growing up in Ames, being a ballboy, becoming an all-time Cyclone great, then coming back to coach his alma mater and bringing us a 4 year stretch of success that hadn't been achieved in the program before. All that can never be taken away from him, no matter how this all goes down. I think if he does go, there are a few main pain points that will continue to sting the fans for a few years down the road though.

-Unfinished business: The loss to UAB last year, not dethroning KU from their streak of regular season titles, not advancing past the sweet 16, leaving before Niang and Co's final season, etc. It feels like ISU hasn't reached their potential yet and we are so, so close to breaking through.

-Public comments: Saying multiple times that ISU was his "dream job", talking about hoping to retire at ISU, promising a national championship banner, telling players (Thomas) he's coming back, etc. Look, we all knew the NBA was on Fred's radar, but comments like these gave fans hope that he really did want to stay here his whole coaching career. We all know that Ames is a special place to CFH and his family, but you don't have to make comments like these to the media if you know leaving for the NBA is your ultimate goal.

-#HoibergWatch - It's a different age than it used to be with Twitter, social media, etc. but I think fans will remember how this dragged on for multiple weeks and just seemed to get uglier and uglier. Granted, before the Bulls job opened, CFH didn't necessarily need to come out and say anything, but now that Thibs is gone is seems like the more details that get released, the worse this is looking for FH. Hearing about telling recruits he couldn't commit to being here, how he interviewed in person for the Orlando job, and other details that make this move look like it was already in the works has really rubbed fans the wrong way.

I do think Fred has some chance to save some face when he finally does come out and say something to the public, but until then things are just going to get uglier between Cyclone fans and him. Fred will still always have a special legacy at ISU no matter what, but I think if he leaves now us fans are left with a sour taste in our mouths and think to ourselves "what could have been" if he stayed.

Yep. He is just another guy to me now. I believed him and his hype.

Dont wish him ill but just another coach who had moderate success and jumped ala Floyd.
