What motivates the heated debates in the Coaching Search threads?

Not sure if this belongs here or in the basketball thread. I put it here because it is more about the psychology behind the discussion, rather than the discussion itself.

So I was thinking today...why do some of us get so worked up about something for which we have no impact on the result. Unless there are some big donors or AD staff lurking anonymously on the board, none of us can actually influence the final selection of our new coach. Yet we spend hours and hours engaging in the debate on who is the best candidate, why so-and-so is or isn't qualified, etc. What do you think motivates us to take the time and energy to do this?

Is it because:
  1. We are hoping the final choice will match with our preference, so later we'll be able to say, "I knew it should be this guy"
  2. We think that in some small, small way, our individual argument will eventually trickle up to the decision-makers, and we'll actually have a tiny influence on the decision
  3. We actually believe we'll be able to convince the CF community we are right, and build a grass-roots voice for our preferred candidate that will have an influence on the decision
  4. We just love to argue and disagree with people, and this is a relatively harmless way to flex our debating muscles
  5. We are secretly fueling the click-bait strategy that Chris and Jeremy are cleverly executing behind the scenes (just kidding...had to throw that one in there for kicks)
  6. Any other ideas?

For me personally, it's probably a blend of #1, #2, and #4, even though 1 and 2 are foolish and naive. But I don't know what else it would be except for that.

Thoughts?

7. This is a message board and people have different opinions.

I'm gonna go with that one.

#4 is a certainty for some posters on here. They argue in almost every thread they post in. Over and over and over. Good thing CW and the mods have patience ..................

Because Cyclone fans are normally passionate in their support of our team, and even more so with the recent success. People will argue more about things that they are passionate about. I see that as a good thing.
Agreed, it's great we are passionate. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that we all do this. It certainly is entertaining to read some of the discussions, that's for sure. I just read some posts sometimes and wonder, "why would you take the time to write that?"
Ironically, I'm sure many of you are asking the same question about my OP. :wideeyed:

It's interesting to me, too. I guess some posters like to argue, some like to *****, and some poster's mothers huffed Freon while they were in the womb.

It may be because some of us older CFers have been promised great coaching hires( Duncan, Criner, Walden, Chizek, Trickey, Nance, Morgan, McDermot,; and seen them turn programs dead. We want coaches that at least give us hope that the teams can get the base excited and challenge for titles!

Ain't that the damned truth. Too many duds. I think a lot of us are worried Jamie's gonna screw this one up. Leath may feel the same way...

Just a guess, the same one who argue uniform/helmet and pregame music believing it matters.

People just enjoy sharing their thoughts and connecting with others through sports. Part of that is playing armchair AD/coach/player to figure out how to process and understand everything that goes on with following our favorite team. Other than a few delusional people who think what they post on here has at best a very tiny difference, that's really all there is to it.

Same reason people argue about anything... we are all invested in the program and have different views of what will be best going forward. Sure 99% of us don't have any real say in the decision but it is still a program near and dear to us and we want the right decision to be made (Even though none of us have a crystal ball and know what the decision should be).

I would suggest if you don't want to read differing opinions argued endlessly you should probably go to a site that doesn't have "fanatic" in the name. Maybe " Cyclone spectator" or " Cyclone agnostic" would serve.
