Any mid major hire (and Murray is pretty low on the "mid major" scale) has to prove himself with results. For Prohm, that's a bit complicated because expectations are that a yellow dog could coach next year's team with success.

Natives will be restless until ISU surpasses Fred's accomplishments in some manner, be that in the regular season, recruiting, or the tournament.

IMO, Fred's best attribute was his ability to instill confidence in his players. He was very good at almost all aspects of the game (except defense, but nobody is perfect), but this was the most unique. Everyone knew exactly where they had the green light from and was always looking for their shot. This is not the case on a lot of teams and I hope we won't miss it in the coming years...

Yep, his offense worked in large part because of it. Opposite of LE and TF, but again there are many ways to win. Tactically we can win differently IMO, but anyone that is not as good strategically in putting the team/program together and roster management will see the instability we went through before Fred (including under Orr, TF, and LE).

Of course even Fred was setting himself up for some down years and weakened this upcoming year due to his handling of NBA interest. Now Prohm gets to clean up that mess.

I think you meant, never trail in a game. If this site holds true to form a lot of posters think we should never be behind in a game or miss a shot.

I think you meant never be up by less than 10 points. Including at tip off. I can already hear Clonedude jumping ship because we're only up 9-2 in the first two minutes of a game.

It is scary how that isn't a joke.
Oh man, remembering how unrealistically high expectations are, he is going to find out how crazy we are very soon. Even with Golden Boy Fred, people still reacted like we shouldn't have bad possessions let alone bad games.

@CycloneMBB: "This is a home run hire. I have always admired how Steve's teams have played and I know Cyclone fans will too.â€￾ - Fred Hoiberg

Easy there, the only two recruits that suffered were Darin Williams and the possibility of getting Diallo. Even if CFH would have gotten those commitments by saying he'd stay and then leaving for Chi-town at this point both would have left at this stage of the game most likely and ISU roster would be the same (assuming everyone stays).

I am guessing most coaches would take this type of situation to take over, Top 10 roster with battle tested vets to show his style and sell recruits right away, as opposed to most mid major situations were the coach has to totally rebuild year one.

Florida, a non blue blood with recent success, had Donovan leave in a similar fashion to CFH. They hired a respected Mid-Major coach, resulting in recruiting decommits player leave for the draft and look to be starting from scratch.
I would like to think Prohm prefers his ISU situation to start his tenure to that one.

The only two? That is laughable. Recruiting has been constipated by Fred's interest in the NBA for a couple years now.

Basically as soon as we would have gotten past the hurdle of him not having a name/success to recruit to, recruiting started to slow due it his inability to assure recruits. Hell, we didn't even go after high school guys to avoid it.

Our situation is different than Florida only because our guys are smart enough to know they would not get drafted and because we have only upperclassmen that can't transfer, not because of Fred. Starting from scratch is next year, although at least the Florida staff had some time in spring to get started on that year.

I know it hurts most to hear any criticism of Fred, but only two recruits? Good grief.

Priority #1 is winning over all the players, and it sounds like he got a good start yesterday. Hopefully the one on one's go just as well! I'm interested in hearing him speak today. The Murray State radio guy sure sounded impressed with him.

While I agree. I did listen to MM interview and it sounds like MM wants to keep Mann badly. Think it would crush MM if Mann wasnt retained. WTS, I don't see Mann staying unless TJ is gone. Won't keep both prob.

i bet he says he is excited and that he has a great team and they are going to play a fun style of basketball and win. Then I bet everyone will be excited thinking he is so awesome.

Do you think your hissy fit is going to cause Leath and Pollard to rethink their decision and hire TJ?

I also feel that Prohm might be a better game day coach but only time will tell. It's interesting he's already told the players that he wants to work on and improve their defense. Prob shocked them to hear the word. Lol. If this team can improve marinally on that end of the floor this team is going to be awesome. Niang looks even more in shape than he did during last season. He just looks different.

Western Kentucky and Austin Peay are Murray State's rivals. Now Steve's gonna be walking into Allen Fieldhouse. Welcome to the big leagues!

And I hope he sees the chip on the shoulders of the players and himself develops that chip. He'll pay respect as any coach would...but maybe he'll dig into Cyclone history and throw a "but at the end of the day, it's just another gym!" If he did that, I think he'd elevate his status among us all.

Spot on. I think Hoiberg did get a lot of grace because he won (or came back to win)...but we may use some defense to generate fast breaks and also to play a little less "math" basketball (more shots, more threes=wins).

I'm looking forward to Prohm. Obviously the talent levels vary from level to level of schools, but coaching decisions and prep is a transferable skill.
