We have to think about future raises for Prohm too if successful, $1.5m isn't going to keep him around if he has success for the next 3 years....

Can't wait to see the contract details, especially the buyout.

Where's all the Mann was leaving talk coming from? I get Progm may not keep him but people seem to think he'd leave on his own.

There was quite a bit of talk that he wouldn't have been on TJ's staff. I think he got engaged last year as well and may want to move somewhere else.

It's not always good business to pay the minimum it takes to get a hire. People generally live up to your manifested expectations and others outside the program will value them more also.

That's a fair point, and the only conclusion I can draw is that Leath didn't trust Pollard on the hire, but he trusts Prohm to hire his own staff.

It isn't a fair point at all, just a kid throwing a fit.
Leath stepped in because of what this hire means to the ISU brand as the position is one of the most visible. It had little to do with monetary responsibility. He then compares the salary of a single position to summing up the entire staff budget. WTF.
Butthurt is overused, but it has never been displayed more than by Gunner the past two days.

Because he's been job searching for about a month and I don't even think he lives in Iowa anymore

JP will be the man when it comes to what the assistants will be paid. Prohm will run the assistants by JP and then they will talk about the expected compensation is to be. But JP is not going to just blindly open his wallet. Prohm has a $7.5 million contract over 5 years. Some people were throwing out silly numbers like $2 million plus should be the salary for the pool of mid-major coaches we had interviewing.

Otzelberger gets paid $230,000 whether he is an assistant or not.

Leath made those comments himself. I'm fine with the hire, but president's tend to stick around a lot longer than AD's, and I don't like the direction it's headed if the president is calling the shots when it comes to athletics. I don't even really like Pollard; he's squirrelly, and doesn't have the personality and professionalism that I would prefer in an AD, but a neutered AD or a puppet AD isn't going to be able to get anything done going forward. This might be the biggest hire in the history of ISU right now, but it won't be for long. How is everyone going to feel when Leath is running the football coaching search? That's all.

After Chizik and CPR I'm not sure Leath could do worse then JP in football coaching searches.

At some point, we may consider that coaching searches just aren't JP's thing

He made those comments? Context.

Running the search? Good lord, you distort everything.
I would be pleased that the most powerful position in keeping the University moving forward has that much interest in the most important position in moving the ISU brand forward. About time.

We get it, you are being a little ***** because had Leath not stepped in and recommended JP do a search, TJ would have likely been selected. Don't hate Leath for doing his job when it became apparent JP was slacking on his.

You're still pretty ridiculous. It'd be even worse if I thought you believed half the stuff you posted.

It is also important to get the opinion of the guy in charge before you make a hire like this. The brand of ISU basketball can be huge, Leath knows this. He just wanted to be sure JP picked the correct guy for the job. These searches are not easy and it never hurts to get a 2nd opinion on a guy. I think it is a good think that Leath got involved and knows how important athletics are to the University.

I might be in the minority, but I would rather retain Mann over TJ. For one, TJ will be looking to leave. Secondly, if you've listened to Fred's post game comments over the last two seasons it sounds like Cornell lead a ton of the scouting and game planning. For that reason alone I would like him back. He can also the be the bridge to Prohm that TJ was to Fred

That is what asst coaches do, they leave. If coaches are leaving your program to be a head coach or get themselves into a better situation, that is a good thing. I don't understand why people think these coaches should stay at one place their whole life. They move on, they move around until they get that chance to be a head coach or they realize it isn't going to happen, they get out our stay put.

So you prefer the Sally Mason/Gary Barta thing going on over in Iowa City?

Yes please. Give Leath the responsibility for a FB coaching search. I do not want Pollard anywhere near a FB coaching search.

What are the things that get President's fired? I'd argue 80% of the time it's some athletics related scandal. Damn right the President should be involved with who is heading up the major teams. Presidents don't get fired for missing projected enrollment numbers. They do when their major athletic coach has criminal/academic/NCAA problems.

To be fair a Prohm-type guy is the absolute best we could do in a football search. Somebody who's won a few times in the Sun Belt. A guy like Mark Hudspeth would be considered an absolute home run for the ISU football program. But he has the ability to make the jump into most mid-tier Power 5 jobs that would open up, so you'd doubt that he'd want to take the risk of an ISU where the odds of failure are higher than most places. Back to square one.

The big difference there is we have a shot at keeping Prohm if we are successful in basketball, but a guy like Hudspeth is headed to the SEC at the first chance if he ever manages to win 7 games in a year (or 5 games over two years like Chiz).

Of course, at the time both Chizik and Rhoads were considered "home run" hires.
