This probably won't be popular but ISU needs to drop the Iowa game

Very few schools play 10 power 5 opponents a year. For a coaching staff trying to build a program that is a steep hill to climb.

I know it is a rivalry and sells out the stadium but going to bowl games consistently would do more for the program.

That's going to change, very soon, though. Big 10 is eliminating FCS opponents and encouraging schools replace them with power 5 opponents. The SEC is constantly made fun of for this. With the onset of 9 game conference schedules and the way the playoff committee looks at strength of schedule, in 5 years, nearly everyone will play 10 power 5 opponents per year.

I used to be for dropping Iowa. But now it's one of our typically winnable games which makes me want to keep it. Without Iowa we would've been 1-11 last season...

Every P5 team will play 10 P5 teams every year starting within the next few years. We can't be scared of Iowa. Calling it a lose-lose game is stooping down to their level.

Iowa is the 3rd easiest team we play this year (behind UNI and Kansas) why would we want to drop it?

Once we consistently start beating Toledo, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State.....then maybe.

If that's the case, will Iowa be able to pony up the cash to compete with other schools looking to schedule us?

Precisely.

Iowa is better than Texas and Toledo and probably Texas Tech as well. In the same realm as OK State and WV.

I don't think it is fair to say that very few P5 schools play 10 P5 opponents. Much of the B10 and B12 do.

The only reason I can see to drop the game is so that some people stop measuring our program on the Iowa game. I'm more worried about Iowa dropping us. They are going to a 9 game conference schedule in 2017 which means they really won't be able to play a P5 team other than us in the non-conference and I don't think, long term, that's what they want to do. I could see this going to a 2 on, 2 off type arrangement in the future. That also would allow us to look at someone other than Iowa as a P5 non-con like Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, Mizzou, etc.

Way up there
The game is the least important thing about this rivalry. If you were anywhere near JTS Saturday you should understand the impact the rivalry has on the entire state. As long as there are 15-20k fans showing up just to tailgate (buy food, parking, beverages etc..) this game isn't going anywhere.

Can we beat any of these more than Iowa?

Plenty of teams will be looking our way if the Iowa game somehow vanished. They would be powers looking for a 2 for 1 (2 at their place) or a one-shot deal where we come to them as the sacrifice to start their season.

ISU is .500 vs Iowa the last 20 years. What other team ISU plays can you say that about.

I'd like to keep it because we lost the Missouri rivalry and the Nebraska "rivalry". Rivalries are what makes college sports great. However, since I no longer live in the state of Iowa, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if for some reason the series was changed to a once every other year or so format. I do think it would help ISU to be able to schedule another weak team to try to get another win, but again I'd rather keep it every year.
