Mangino wants to take over. He's calling plays and directing guys to fumble/false start so that Paul steps down and he can take over. As interim head coach, he gets a pay bump, which translates to more money for Hickory Park.

Hickory Park has to be the reason Mangino came to Ames. Given the offense's performance, it's not like he's too focused on coaching. So what else could it be?
