I'm heading up to the cities this Wednesday for a concert (Frank Turner) at the Varsity Theater. Having experienced the nightlife in downtown Minneapolis, but never in Dinkytown, I was just curious if any Fanatics had some must-do's or must-avoid's.

Yeah...avoid Dinkytown. It's basically a dorm.

Thanks for the input. Is there a better option nearby other than downtown Minneapolis? Our hotel is right next to TCF so I just figured it'd be easy to stay in the area. That said, I'm sure the concert will get over late so if I'm out of options it isn't a huge deal.

Make sure to hit up Mesa Pizza! (directly across the street from the Varsity)

Dinkytown is okay if you're in college. Like Welch Ave basically with more entertainment options. it seems to have changed in recent years away from eclectic to a more traditional bar area.

Downtown MPLS ranges from dive bars to strip clubs to high-end clubs. If you have transportation I'd suggest Hennepin Ave for a more diverse selection of places. Maybe even uptown area if you have time/energy.

If you're looking for nightlife, Northeast Minneapolis is great. There are several breweries there if you're interested in those, and some really interesting bars/restaurants ranging from the diviest dives (Otter's, Vegas Lounge) to the more upscale (Red Stag, places on St. Anthony Main) to the slightly strange (Psycho Suzi's, Betty Danger's). It's right next to both downtown and Dinkytown, but much more fun.

Avoid going out in Dinkytown. Cab or Uber it to NE Mpls or the North Loop of downtown Minneapolis (where I live). LOTS of fun bars and restaurants and breweries.

As stated before, Dinkytown nightlife is for college students. If you're about that age it would be fun. Al's Breakfast makes a good breakfast and should be close to your hotel.

I would concur with the notion to go to NE Minneapolis. it is close and there are plenty of options on the East side of the river on 1st and on Hennepin.

If you are willing to travel a bit further, Dahlia mentioned the North Loop. There is a lot of good places to eat around that area (big fan of the Freehouse). Also, Psycho Suzie's and Betty Dangers are a blast and are just a bit north of the places on 1st and Hennepin.

Like everybody else I would say go to NE Minneapolis since it is close. Otherwise I would make the effort to go to Uptown before Dinkytown, unless you are 24 or younger.
