We can these conversations about which players are failing most ad nauseum. We can have them within a given year, or comparing the performance of position across years. The common denominator in all this is the head coach. Voila.

Common denominator is different players fail at different times. Mostly because they are just a step slower, a step little weaker, a little undersized, or lack a little mental focus. They have to do everything perfect every time where as the opponent can cover a screw up with a their touch more talent.

I have never called the post game call in show but did Saturday. I was ****** at Williams and Whitver putting all the blame on Sam. When I called and pointed out the other failures they agreed, hummed and hawed and then moved on.

Sam can get better and needs to get better. If people want to beat him up after TT great. He played like ****. But he played well on Saturday. even normal Sam haters in my section stated as much and then I get on the call in show and Chris and Jack lead the charge. understand it from Chris but Whitver surprised me. He knows better but hen he was a WR.

I think you are missing the point..... The biggest push here is we need a change, Sam is a great player that has never lead the team to success where it really counts W's and L's.... Whether that is completely his fault or not we need to make a change as this positions dictates more toward our success than any other on the field.... I would love to see a 50-50 break in snaps between Lanning and Sam the rest of the year with adjustments depending on the opponent but to me that is enough change to keep the defense guessing and give us a little edge that tapes don't show, that and don't try to make each quarterback do what they are not comfortable doing. Woody covered this well, same at his best is throwing on the run outside the pocket and running the ball more, let him play that way. Lanning seems like the zone read, throw from in the pocket type QB, use him as that type of QB and design the play calls accordingly.... We just need to change and I think that is the biggest push from CW, Whitver and the fan-base..... Especially at the 2-5 junker of the season.... Take some damn chances.

You are too far in the tall grass drinking the delicious kool-aide.... He orchestrates these drives, the drive is successful and not successful based on pts on the board, in the end the success of the program is also judged on W's, you get wins by outscoring you opponent, whether the fault of certain plays failing are his or others is may have little to do with the outcome but in the end he is the top leadership role and with no sucess on pts on the board we need a change, get over your SR is not to blame message, no one agrees we need changes and everyone is pushing that.....

Not sure where I miss the point. I would love to see Lanning get a couple complete series. That is about 25% of the snaps.

With all due respect to Woody....Lanning has thrown 12 passses this year completed seven. Only a couple have come when the game was still at hand. I am not sure anyone knows what kind of QB he is.

I don't want to here that he didn't hit people in stride either...he did. Hell he completed four, well thrown slants in a row and threw a perfect pass to Wesley the series when Montgomery got knocked on his arse.

Would not say perfect, but he threw an more accurate rope the back shoulder of a receiver that can makes plays, than I have seen all year. And for some reason that was the last play we saw him participate..... Which is general theme for this thread why not give him a chance..... What do we have to lose? More than that what did we have to lose in that game???

Good post, and an illustration of how thin the margin of error is against our schedule. You need a special QB to win in this league.

• Montgomery down the sideline catches but safety jars it loose
• Lazard in the endzone DB knocks away a well thrown ball great play by the DB
• Throws it at Warren's feet to avoid a sack - worst play of the game in my opinion as The play call had Bundrage running against #18 and he had him completely beat but Sam doesn't throw on time and instead runs himself into a near sack/disaster.
• Bundrage down the sideline where Bundrage runs the route to far inside - he wasn't too far inside - the problem was lack of air on the throw to let him run under it - needed a throw similar to the first half throw he made to Lazard on the right sideline
• Lazard catch that was originally ruled a fumble and then incomplete
• Over throws Lazard who was double covered
• Out pattern to Montgomery that DB gets a hand on - again it was thrown late which was why the DB got there - needs to be thrown when he is making his cut, not afterwards

In addition, the fumble on the blitz that killed the drive is on the QB - our WR saw the blitz and was wide open if the QB reads the D correctly and then we have a 1 on 1 with our WR and a safety for a possible score. Both that play and the throwing at Warren's feet were drive killers. I like Sam, but my issue is his failure to throw the ball on time to throw his receivers open. I have seen him do it a few times, such as the throw to Wesley against Iowa and the throw to Bundrage against Texas a few years ago, but too often he holds it too long waiting to see if the receiver will be open as opposed to reading the defense and trusting his WRs to win.

Taz, I really appreciate these breakdowns. It makes me wonder....

I have a brilliant idea for CycloneFanatic. I think they should have a 'Film Junky' thread / article every week after games. It would take a LOT of time, but it would be amazing!!!

I would love a breakdown of each play throughout a game. Rating of each throw and how it ended up, each running play and what happened who had a key block or missed block, each defensive series including missed tackles / yards allowed after initial contact, secondary positioning / success rate of each pass attempt allowed.

I think it would really allow an objective feel to these threads about personnel discussions and REALLY up the ante on how us cyclones research the games and give us daily visitors something to take a look at. In addition, it would be great to quantify how we are doing!! Anyway, just a thought.

I don't care if he was 25-25 for 5000 yards in quarters 2,3,&4. If your team doesn't score any offensive points in that timeframe then the QB did not have a good game. Your expensive excuse machine is very nice and you definitely paid for the additional 10,000 excuses upgrade but SR is a major problem for this offense. Please note, I didn't say THE PROBLEM, I said, A MAJOR PROBLEM. He needs to see the bench. And I'm not saying he needs to be there permanently, but he needs to take a seat for a little bit.

Winning quarterbacks find a way to win.We couldn't sustain drives after the first quarter. I believe the coaches were mostly at fault as evidenced by the quote that inspired this thread, but Sam didn't have a good game. There are no points awarded for yards between the Twenties and there are no stats for open receivers not thrown to..

Trips right and the play is to the right. It was a corner blitz and the safety rolled over so not as open as one thinks as it is a 30 yard throw across the field. No pre snap read to give the indication of a corner blitz. Pre snap read was safety help on that side go away from it. It was a great call by the defense and the WR needs to indicate the blitz verbally and either didn't or Sam didn't hear it.

The pass to Warren...really? No blame to the OL on that one...hmmmm. **** poor protection.

As to throwing WRs open...you can't be talking about Saturday because he did well. Like on Bundrage down the sideline or about half those incompletions.

Like I said, people pick 3-5 throws every game and claim Sam is awful. Every QB misses 3-5 throws per game.
