How we can get Harrison Barnes

I was attending ISU when The Mayor was recruited. It was between us and (I think) UCLA, and he leaned very heavily toward UCLA. One thing that got him to play for ISU is that the student body got involved. I am a bit fuzzy about the details, but I remember students signed some kind of large poster or something, with thousands of signatures, asking him to play for ISU. UCLA tried something similar, but I remember Freddie saying the ISU version was different in that the signatures were from people he knew. Since it worked for Fred Hoiberg, perhaps it could work again.

I think Fred's final three were Stanford, Arizona and us - maybe Nebraska too.

Maybe have a ton of ISU fans start showing up in ISU gear at all of the Ames High basketball games. That would be cool to me if I was considering a school and had a ton of fans show up to my high school games to watch and cheer for me.

**cough, cough ** **Money under the table**:wink:Just kidding
In all seriousness, we need to start winning, and the staff needs to keep recruiting him to come to ISU extremely hard.

Hopefully he likes Ames and wants to stay close to home. If he wants to, he will be a Cyclone. If he wants to experience a different part of the country, he'll leave. All we can do is continue to support him and let him know that the basketball team could use him.

It was between ISU, Stanford, and Arizona led by Lute. ISU started a campaign of names of fans that wanted Fred to remain in Ames and Fred read thru alll the names and could not believe how many fans he knew. You can no longer do this according to NCAA rules I believe. We will see if Harrison has a loyalty or NOT ?

Go Cyclones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if we give him the Lucca treatment I think we can retain him. We seriously need to show this kid that we want him. Chants, signs, whatever....

I also believe if we show improvement this year and also next year (his sr year if not already commited) we can keep him.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Cyclone Alley needs to get the WE WANT HARRISON chants and signs going.

esp. since he attends most (all) the home games - get the student section behind this kid! ....now we just need a chant. "Free Barnes "might not be the best slogan in this one

re Hoiberg I'm fairly certain his final three were ISU, Arizona, and Stanford. And Lute Olson did the petition with signatures first in Tucson. but Johnny Orr said "hell I can do that" and got WAY more signatures than Lute. Of course he would. Fred would have gone to ISU anyway but the petition thing made Lute and Arizona look silly after Johnny trumped them in a huge way.

Based on that article, we don't have a chance. He wants to play on a championship team, not team that wins 15 -18 games a year. Maybe he is just using us to get more practice for his real school. Time will tell.

They say the mind is the first thing to go, but if I'm right, I'm pretty sure Fred's final two were us and Nebraska. He strongly considered them because his grandfather played there.

I see some of you guys have jokingly hinted at doing some shady things. I took it as a joke, and I am sure most of CycloneFanatic will as well. However, we all know how things can be taken out of context. Also, in light of the WJ situation, my opinion is that even joking about such things is bad form. I am not trying to act high and mighty. This is just my opinion. I just think we would be better served by keeping things positive and on the up-and-up.

We have to start winning.... period.

I truly believe Harrison Barnes would love to stay in Ames, but not if it is going to be for a losing team. Like it or not, Barnes' goal is to make it to the NBA. In order to best do that, he has to be seen nationally. He won't be seen much if ISU doesn't ever make the tourney while he is here.

ISU has to give Harrison a reason to stay in Ames. If we are winning.... he will be as big a hero as Hoiberg.... bigger than if he were anywhere else in the country IMO. But if we are a loser, he'll just be another player on an ordinary team.
