Don't disagree with that but Illinois is still an easier/more appealing job than ISU. Plus, Illinois has had success.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_Fighting_Illini_football

The Athletic Department at Illinois has an interim AD, and is a mess. Illinois may have potential, but ISU is more stable and is more successful at this point in time. If a Coach is a Big Ten guy and wants an easy schedule, then it is a big plus.

The Big 12 is a gauntlet right now aside from Kansas.

There are negatives to the ISU job, no doubt, but you have as loyal and passionate a fanbase as there is in College Sports.

There are blue collar guys that don't need to be flashy, and that is the kind of guy we need.

I doubt many college football coaches care that much about this.

Something I found from 2008 that may apply again this time

#1 Coach gets fired. Half the people hate the idea the other half love it.
#2 Coaching search happens and every big name is thrown that they are going to be the next ISU head coach
#3 Reality hits and we hire someone without a big name
#4 At first the fans are a little apprehensive
#5 JP holds a press conference and everyone starts going nuts
#6 fans expectations fo crazy and by the end of August fans are talking about bowl games
#7 Football season starts.

I won't be excited about any hire until I see them win more than 2-3 games a year consistently.

Iowa State is a more appealing job than UCF just for the fan support.

Students can go for free to UCF games (they have about 65,000 students) and they still didn't fill up the stadium, even when they were good.

I doubt many college football coaches care that much about this.

They will care about it. For two reasons. One do the fans support the program to use them as a recruiting tool (i.e. continuing to improve facilities and a good home game environment). Secondly it can show how patient the school and it's fans are. ISU has shown that with moderate success you will have great job security and be financially set for life. In today's world of AD's with hair triggers and not allowing coaches time to establish their program that can be very attractive to a coach for various reasons.

Sure it's not the number one factor but coaches do care about it.

Stitt happens in Ames. . . ?

And now, for something completely different . . . an innovator par excellence.

"It's almost like a moving, throwing Wing-T," (Mike) Leach said. "It's pretty cool. I think he's highly respected among coaches. Everybody would see how he did stuff. It kind of kept us in awe."

sb nation - How Montana coach Bob Stitt's fun and lethal offense actually works
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/9/4/9241843/bob-stitt-offense-montana

espn - Meet Montana's Bob Stitt, your coach's favorite coach
http://espn.go.com/ncf/story/_/id/13529396/montana-grizzlies-coach-bob-stitt-cult-favorite-coaches

"What he has designed is one of the best finesse spread offenses in the country, with several clever adaptations to make it particularly explosive. The run game is basically just a constraint. The offense is designed to punish every opponent response with the passing game, and when Stitt can, he goes for the throat."

usa today - Montana's Bob Stitt can't be overlooked any longer
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...coaching-dana-holgorsen-sonny-*****/71644082/

While he was toiling away in the relative anonymity of Division II football, Bob Stitt used to live vicariously through the group of high-profile coaches who would borrow his ideas. . . .

After his debut last weekend at Montana, which knocked off No. 1 North Dakota State 38-35, Stitt is no longer a coaching myth. He’s an overnight sensation nearly two decades in the making. . . .

Within the coaching profession, it was no secret that Stitt was a high-level offensive mind who was practically working miracles at an engineering school (Colorado School of Mines) of fewer than 5,000 undergraduates where the average ACT score for entering freshmen is 30. . . .

sure, in a vacuum. But if you're a coach from the south with recruiting ties in Florida, that job makes far more sense than coming up to ISU. Likewise, if you're a coach from the midwest it wouldn't make a ton of sense to take the UCF job.

I'd say all of the following would be more appealing than ISU (that would be viewed as being on the same level):

Illinois
Maryland
South Carolina
Missouri
UCF (Debatable, certainly)

The bigger problem is more openings are coming, and anyone who could get the above jobs will wait on the below jobs before taking them:

USC
Miami
Virginia Tech

I don't know why anyone would accept the ISU job before all of the above job openings are closed. And that's before the LSU job goes on the market, and potentially others that we don't know about yet.

This is a bad year for ISU to be trying to hire someone.

And how many of those schools will Iowa State be up against for hiring a coach? 2-3 on that list? Illinois, UCF, Maryland(?)?

Think about the type of guy Pollard wants to hire..family man..generally nice person..has run a winning program..I don't think we will hire an assistant or coordinator from another P5 school..just my hunch. I do think Frost will be a candidate and interview. I think Frost is prob the top Assistant that will interview and I'd be ok with him as our HC honestly. Lots of positives surrounding Frost. WTS..it will likely be a list of Brohm, maybe Fleck, Alford, Frost, Calhoun, Ken N(Navy).

We can land any of these guys. Any of these guys would take the ISU job. Outside maybe Fleck and Frost who might hold out for a bigger gig some day. Just my thoughts based on how we've seen Pollard operate in past with other hires and the bball candidates.

Re: Could Iowa State pursue Jeff Brohm?

Current HC of Western Kentucky (9-2), not making a lot of noise in the HC carousel rumors. Also a former NFL and XFL (yes, that XFL) QB, clearly has a good offensive mind as his Hilltoppers are by far and away the highest scoring team in Conference USA. Personally, I'd love to see a brilliant offensive mind become our next Head Coach, and this is a guy that seems to fly under the radar, ie. unlike Herman and Fuente who will be on everybody's short list this year

Building up Western Kentucky to a mid-major power before taking the Iowa State job and leading us to a dozen or so titles is my standard career path in NCAA 14 Dynasty Mode, so this seems like a flawless plan.

With the Illinois opening, is there a chance they give the interim the head coaching gig full time? It seems like he has done okay given the circumstances. That would be one less opening to compete with.

If I were a coach, I would absolutely go to Maryland and Illinois ahead of Iowa State. The chances of getting to 6 wins there are much higher simply given the schedule.

If I were Tom Herman and Maryland and South Carolina both offered me the same $$$, I'm pretty sure I'd take Maryland.

The more a think about this I am all in on Tony Alford hire, I could really see some good coaching hires on his staff with the teams he has been on the past few years, he is a great recruiter and to me would keep what we have in tack. I could see him keeping Ayeni, bringing in Loney, and Sage. He has great Iowa connections and great exposure in successful programs in College Football. Make it happen JP.....

That would be ideal. I think they are probably our biggest competition in going after the types of coaches we can get (PJ Fleck for example)

I would have agreed with you last year, but the SEC East is terrible and Big10 East is getting much better. OSU, UM and MSU is rough, will see how PSU does in a year or two.

He is currently my first choice as well. Upside is great. The basement is well we know what the basement is.

The basement is where we have been the last 2 years, I think we starting to trend up, just the gut-wrenching way we found to lose games this year makes is a coaching/leadership issue....
