Looking at the top 5 in-state prospects for the 2017 class (Rivals), wondering what everyone's thoughts are:

1) Juan Harris, ****, 395 lb 6'3'' DT West Union, IA (committed to Iowa, for now) Other offers - Michigan, Texas, Vandy, Virigina. My thoughts - where is the ISU offer? Assuming we will give one soon on this kid.

2) Rocky Lombardi, ***, 196 lb 6'3'' QB, Valley High School (open). Offers - ISU, Virginia. Have to think we are in the drivers seat here. Anybody seen him play?

3) Tristian Wirfs, ***, 265 lb 6'5'' OT, Mount Vernon, IA. (committed to Iowa, for now). Offers - Iowa State, Iowa. My thoughts - I'd think the new coach and new energy around our program, plus the stadium updates, we just need to get this kid in for a visit.

4) Coy Kirkpatrick, ***, 253lb 6'4'' DE , Madrid Iowa. (committed to Iowa, for now). Offers - Iowa, Iowa State. I've never heard of this kid. Just need to get him in front of MC and touring our facilities. That plus early playing time and I'd like our chances. Anybody seen him play?

5) Jacob Coons, ***, 240 lb 6'4'' OLB, Solon Iowa. (open). Offers - Iowa State, Iowa. We could always use another solid OLB. Same as above - just need to get these kids around MC. I think his energy and passion will do wonders with these kids. Anybody seen Coons play or know much about him?

What exactly makes you like the chances of flipping kids who are already verbally committed simply by getting them in front of MC? Results speak much louder than words. If Iowa hadn't had the year they just had then maybe, but considering they just went 12-0 in the regular season and were within a few inches of winning a B10 Championship I'd say there's close to a 0% chance any of these kids flip to ISU. If someone flips it will be Harris and with the offers he has he sure as hell isn't going to flip to ISU.

Wirfs just committed yesterday and clearly said he was shutting down recruiting.

. . . Also looking at the list makes me worry about a bigger focus on in state recruiting. Sounds great in a speech, on paper not so much.

Might be recruiting the prep coaches more than the players . . . but maybe keeping an eye on the kids, too, since several are underclassmen.

Holy ****. I just googled Rocky Lombardi b/c I vaguely remember reading about his dad's issues in CR when they left for Valley, and found Rocky's dad's Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Lombardi

2 Things:
Lombardi went undrafted in the 1984 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears.[SUP][3][/SUP] However, he did not make the team's roster after a violent altercation between Lombardi and four third grade students from Park View Elementary School.

The entire last paragraph seems to have been written by Tony Lombardi himself, as none of it is cited and it reeks of arrogance, bragging about the accomplishments of his Middle School and youth programs and that he has a "highly recruited" son (kid has 2 offers).

No disrespect to Rocky, as I don't know him and haven't seen him play, but just reading the dad's Wiki page (i know, not the most reliable thing) and hearing people talk about him...I can see why coaches avoid the parental baggage.

You essentially said the exact same thing for each of the listed players. "Just get them around MC and I like our chances". Haha. I doubt we flip in Iowa commits after the season they just had.

Building for the future. It is a process.

I admire your optimism but the committed to Iowa ones listed above are probably not going to sway just because of "getting them around MC".

The season that Iowa had this year will help them on the recruiting trail next year. Harris will be a toss up because he's got some heavy hitters on him but the others will stay firmly committed.

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/4530856/zach-dykstra Zach Dykstra Jr. Tackle/DE from Spirit Lake. This kid should be in the top 5! He played against both Wirfs and Harris in the state quarter finals and finals and did a great job. Check him out in the Hudl video against Harris (#51 Black Jersey). He was not intimidated by either Harris or Wirfs. I would take him over Harris for sure. Very similar to Wirfs in size. Great foot work, dominating blocker, and aggressive down field. Campbell and his staff need to take a look.

I wonder if KF's age will start to catch up with him on the recruiting trail. He'll be what, 66 when the 2017 class are RS seniors? Have to think there is a good chance he won't be there for their senior season. I'm thinking some programs (probably B10 programs) will start negatively recruiting against Iowa on that basis soon.

Lombardi will go somewhere like Notre Dame. He is the real deal. If not he will be a hawk. Mark it down.

Not exactly sure.

Used to run into dad while he was coaching beau at youth wrestling tourneys, had hawk gear on quite often. Would say he leans that way more.

I think the instate recruiting success will be incremental. First, the new staff needs to build relationships with the HS coaches. If we have success on the field, this could lead to us getting some of the top in state kids. It also would help if Iowa starts another slide downward.

Good post! One thing I hope this staff can do, is identify talent. They need to see that 225 lb player that moves well and has a frame that he will get better. We just need to get good players wherever we can get them. Success will help recruiting.

I have a feeling whenever Kirk gets to the point where he's actually considering retirement the Iowa program will have a transition in place so that they can be honest with recruits about who their coach would be. Iowa is a lot like the Pittsburgh Steelers (in more ways than just their uniforms). They are loyal to their coaches and that loyalty has proven to pay dividends. Obviously, Brian Ferentz is the most likely successor. I expect him to start taking over more and more roles in order to gain experience over the next 4-5 years. Will be interesting to see when or if Greg Davis decides to step away.

Iowa is light years ahead of us right now with instate kids. They have had a lot of success putting kids, often local kids, into the NFL and they're ranked #5 about to play in the Rose Bowl.

Campbell will have to build a foundation first, before we have much of a shot at getting the cream of the crop outside of Central Iowa.

Unless they were born and raised as Cyclones. That's always a pocket Ace. Lazard better start having children now!
