I'd reserve judgement on the driver here. It's very well possible he didn't know he hit anything or anyone. Sad case all around.
I feel bad for the bus driver also. My daughter said it was raining hard that morning and difficult to see. This whole situation sucks. No winners anywhere in this.
In this case it sounds like he ran a red light, but I'm always amazed at how little respect students give buses while crossing streets on campus.A friend got killed by a CyRide bus in 2005. Either the driver can't see well or students aren't looking. Sad deal all around.
A bus probably weighs 20 tons or so? The girl probably weighed 130 maybe?Man, I don't know about that. I think you would still know that you had hit something substantial if you hit something as large as a person.
I would think the bus would have had to be out of service or a passenger would have noticed. Very possible the driver didn't know.

I've never driven a bus, so maybe you wouldn't, but I've hit a squirrel with a truck and noticed.
How could a driver hit a pedestrian with such force to cause a fatality that he wouldn't hear/feel it? Seems unlikely to me. Of course we are all just speculating here.
We're talking 20 tons vs a fairly small girl, the bus could just clip her and the injuries could be life threatening. I don't have any first hand knowledge or anything but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that the impact as felt from inside the bus wouldn't necessarily be huge. How could a driver hit a pedestrian with such force to cause a fatality that he wouldn't hear/feel it?
