Also, how do they know he failed to obey a traffic control device? Doesn't that mean there WAS a witness? Or are they computer timed? Or was there a camera the whole time?

My best guess would be there are foward facing cameras on the buses. So, even if it didn't catch video of it hitting her(side-swipe), it would have seen him blow the light before turning left.

Having driven buses in a major city, hitting someone at an intersection or bus stop is a constant fear. People often walk out in front of you or lean out as you pull into a bus stop. Often in major cities, there are grooves formed along the curb because of the frequent stops, so the buses actually lean into the people on the sidewalk sometimes. I could imagine the suspension noise while hitting a low point in the road could mask the sound and feel of hitting someone, especially in a heavy rain.

Also, it is difficult to know which bus would be on what schedule. Buses often switch routes at a "terminal point" or use major roads to get into position. It seems quite possible that this bus was not in-service, but moving into position at the Cy-Ride lot.

And on rainy days, you often get behind schedule, so you may have some pressure to hurry a bit.
I live in the Chicago area, originally from Omaha. So I can also say that a lot of bus drivers are douchebags with the "get out of my way, I'm bigger than you mentality", some big-rig drivers are the same, but not all in either instance. I remember growing up and seeing something in MAD Magazine once about perfect names for one's occupation. For a bus driver the name was Curt Manners, I think that sums it up.

According to Tuttle, Clague was driving westbound on Lincoln Way and made a left turn onto Ash Avenue when he struck Jacobs. Tuttle said the video was not entirely clear, but a loud noise was heard on the recording, and then the video showed Clague driving to the next stop, getting out, and inspecting the vehicle. The video did not show any passengers on the bus, Tuttle said.
Police interviewed Clague, and learned that he had conversations with friends alluding to the accident, but never fully admitting to it. Tuttle also said police believe Clague knew he had struck something.
“If he was driving that route later, he would’ve seen officers at the scene,” Tuttle said.
According to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Story County District Court, text messages show Clague was “fully aware that a fatality had occurred and he had just “went two hours thinking I was involved.’”
Clague also met with a friend the next day and told the friend he thought he had struck and killed Jacobs, the complaint shows.

Yikes, not looking good for him. Even if he didn't know at the time and suspected it may have happened, he should have come forward right away. This just makes it look bad not doing anything.

Looking at his Facebook profile pic, I'm sure he was just scared ********. Doesn't look like a kid with a ton of confidence, or who would do something maliciously.

This means that he has been driving past that scene for weeks . . . not sure how he could do that.

The crappy thing is that if he'd have just stopped afterwards, both the girl and him would likely be in much better shape.

I wonder if he'll be out in time for 6th period where he has a project due. Or at least in time for WrestleMania...

Yeah, before this was released, I was the type that was thinking more of the "may not have known...may have gotten info that put him there, etc" (but I also had a hunch how this hit the news anyone who was near there would reflect on their morning)...but reading this...well, had he come forth the next day would have made sense and still some accountability, but likely would have been chalked up to trauma and just sorting through what could have happened...this quote sure makes it look like he knew something happened and didn't go to the authorities.

No one looked at the Cy Ride video until two weeks ago? One would think that would have been looked at by someone by noon on the day it happened.

game, set, match.

It would be absolutely terrifying situation to be in so it's not like I can't understand why he didn't come forward, but if you're going to go that route, why would you text people and leave evidence of your knowledge.

Not thinking clearly, but clearly thinking badly, then compounding things by trying to stay quiet.

I actually know him. He's an extremely quiet guy, but there's no excuse for this one.

Agreed. You'd think trying to rule out CyRide would be one of the first steps in the investigation.

Or at least you'd pull cyride footage of buses in the area at the time to see if there was anything that could provide info given they were trying to find witnesses.

Been monitoring this one from afar because I can't imagine what that family has been going through for all this time. And while I agree that it's too soon in the process to know what happened, the driver allegedly got out at a later stop and inspected the bus which was unusual.

It's been 1 month since it happened, not really that much time. seems like the authorities did what they were supposed to here and found the person responsible. Too many "experts" on here, lol.
