How about this?

Set times to check the line. On the first day (or first check of the first day), you register in order whoever is line associated with the tents. Have a limit per tent. And register according to student ID. Then, do random checks to make sure that a minimum of that group is there. On later checks, register whoever has joined the line. Again with limits on the number of people per tent. And again using student IDs.

Because registration is tied to student IDs, then you have a way to control the line. You might even tie the registration into the ticket/ID scanning process.

Basically my thought process as well! That is how they should do it if they're gonna regulate it.

Also since we're saying what they need to do, they really need to stop the swiping of cards campus wide. Install a few public transportation style gates (can even have the paper tickets that season ticket holders use to be able to work with these) and eliminates all the problems with those stupid scanners. You can hardwire them in to your network so it doesn't rely on Wi-Fi, freeing up bandwidth to give out better free wi-fi at the games, and doesn't matter what condition the card is in (had to get mine replaced a couple times because it got demagnetized).

They already use the NFC style for getting into the dorms so they backend is mostly set up already.

But wait! There's more! Since you're using NFC technologies to do that, you can just have your ID on your phone which eliminates the need for the card, saving the university on whatever costs they have for that. You can even put it on your Apple Watch or Samsung or Microsoft Band.

Use it on CyRide to get on, use it at dining halls to get in, tie in a bank or credit card or uBill or CyCash account if you want and pay for things in the bookstore, check in to classrooms for those pesky classes that require attendance, use it to pay for laundry in the dorms, have it unlock your actual dorm room and you could even give access to guests when they come, the possibilities are limitless.

Pitt does (or did) just about exactly this for MBB. Students could accrue points by going to Olympic sports and WBB. There would be a set period where you could "register" for a ticket for the next MBB game. If the number registered was less than the number available, everybody got a ticket. If demand outpaced supply, it went to a combined points system/lottery (# of points = # of entries for a ticket), with set times for the winners to claim tickets. Anything left over after the claim period went back into the pool for the waiting list people from the original registration period. After that, the remainder were sold on-demand. Students could also lose points for claiming tickets and not using them.

Personally I hate the idea of having students go to non-men's basketball sports in order to get good men's basketball tickets. I'd prefer that points simply be tied to men's basketball attendance.

I know a few places where they do the point system and all that happens is people show up, swipe, and leave. Especially the Womens and Olympic sports.

This is what I was thinking.

It sounds like me when I took Music 102, where most of your grade was just attending different musical events. Walk in, grab a program (or 5 to distribute to friends), hit the bathroom, walk back out.

What is this swiping of cards thing campus wide? When did this start and what's the purpose?

I am glad no one was hurt. I am just wondering with the tent catching on fire, if ISU might banned people from camping out like this anymore in tents and ice fishing schacks for safety reasons.
Cause it's so much safer to make them stand outside in freezing temps?

At least for women's basketball, I think they now check at halftime too as far as the points go.

Student ID has a magnetic strip on the back (like a credit card) that is basically just your StudentID number. They literally swipe it for every meal you use, every game you go to (no paper tickets for students), for your CyCash, laundry, rec centers . They already have the RFID or NFC chip in them and they use that to get into buildings. But they hire all these people to literally just swipe all day.

Probably been using it for 10 years at least.

Can we stop pretending like the reason for camping out is to get the best seats? You could camp out just one night or come early the morning of the game and probably get in the 1st or 2nd row. So 4-5 days of camping = 1-2 row improvement in your seats. That is a terrible deal.

The real reason to camp out is to have en excuse to do nothing but tailgate for a few days and the good seats is just an added bonus. That is fine, I would do it too if I could.

Not for Kansas or Iowa.

This isn't true.

Approximately how many seats are there in each student row?

Not sure, maybe 30-40 depending on the side of the gym? But you also have to consider the entire row that Cyclone Alley occupies, the reserved seats for recruits/athletes, and the reserved row for the cheerleaders.

I was a student for 4 years of Fred's tenure. My friends and I were always near the front of the line and we were always one of the first tents set up. I promise that we didn't camp out in frigid temperatures purely for a weekend of tailgating.

There is an easy solution. Lottery based on ticket number. Here is what I would propose...

Each student ticket gets number at the start of the season (1-XXX). On big games (or any game for that matter), the university announces which number is "first" in line. All other numbers line up after that person in numerical order (the number right previous to the "first" in line ends up last). When the arena is full, there is cut -off for those still in line.

While maybe not ideal, no one needs to wait except for the line up based on lottery. It is randomized and therefore, most fair.

Thoughts?

I know ticketmaster used to do this for concerts in the past before online sales were huge.

So any ******* who is a student has the same chance at a front row seat as someone willing to sleep in the cold for a week?

No.

Reward dedication. It creates excitement.

If there was absolutely any possible way that students could be allowed to "camp" inside the Scheman, that would be the obvious best system available. Have security work in shifts so that someone is always there to make sure there isn't any trespassing and vandalizing going on. Have the designated line of campers run in a certain shape to keep things in order. When time comes to let the students into Hilton, have staffers there to be sure that the line remains orderly on the walk to Hilton.

Obviously this is NEVER going to happen for about a million reasons. But that's my dream scenario. A lottery system is terrible for those who actually care about the team and a merit system would be unfair to the younger students who still pour their heart and soul into the program. As it stands, camping will continue to happen (I personally love what it does from a publicity standpoint, and while I hate the blatant budging, that would happen anyway). I would guess that the university just takes steps to ban certain items, like heaters, in order to discourage such large numbers of students from camping.
