I like the idea of having a capacity associated with each tent. We always crammed a large amount of people in ours, but for groups like that a second tent is always a possible solution. Keeping track of total students per tent would in theory benefit the department by allowing them to keep track of how long the line has become, and help students who don't plan to camp out have an idea of how early they need to be there on gameday.

Let's say in theory each tent has a lead representative. Their purpose is to be there for the first check-in, and they can be the contact if any dispute is going on about line positioning. That tent is then assigned some sort of designation, whether the representative's last name, their numerical position, something along those lines. The department staffer then marks down, on whatever record keeping item they choose, that "Tent Cynado" is in position #8, and has registered the maximum number of 10 students. Does the staffer then give the tent 10 "tickets" marking their position in line? Just thinking out loud here.

I don't think they should give "tickets," but pre-scan student IDs for a limited number of people per tent. The people with those IDs will be the ones who get in according to their tent placement. And they need to do random checks to make sure that the minimum number of people with proper IDs are there to hold their place in line.

I hope someone is actually paying attention to us. We may have some decent ideas.

Oh, and the random checks could also be safety checks.

Here’s my theory: Don’t oversell student tickets.

Stay with me here, I’m going somewhere with this. We started to oversell student tickets because our attendance sucked for the games students were not excited about. There was always a group of die-hards that went to every game (myself included, from 2010-2014), but there is always the “fringe fans” that were indifferent to a majority of the games. Now that would be fine if they sold their tickets to someone who wanted to go. Usually these fans were too lazy to do that which created empty seats. So our solution was to overfill the pool so that when it was crowded we lost some water, but we still can’t keep it full for every game. The fringe fans are still fringe fans, but now they have the “I won’t be able to get a seat anyways” excuse.

I think we can take care of these fringe fans in an easy way that requires little manpower from the university. Make it so you have to pick up individual tickets for every game a few days before. If the deadline passes and the ticket isn’t claimed, there should be a clause saying the university can resell your ticket for additional profit to someone who actually cares and will go to the game. This will keep the lazy people from having an empty seat with their name on it. The intention is to top off the pool instead of overfilling it. I know what you are thinking, people will still pick up tickets and not use them because they paid for it. At least there is a chance that those people, who obviously aren’t extremely lazy, will sell their ticket.

Nothing sucked more my senior year than having a mandatory class on gameday, and knowing there would be no way I could get a seat for a big game. The main reason IMO that the lines have gotten so ridiculous is because the threat of a non-guaranteed seat. I’m not saying we should get rid of lines. I think lines are a great way to put the most passionate fans up front. The people freezing their butts off deserve the best seat. Assigned seat would put underserving people up front. However, some people deserve to go that don’t have the time to stand in line for two days. Their seat may not be good, but god damn it they can still go and cheer for their team.

Anyways, I think that would be worth a try. Feel free to poke holes in it or make revisions.

Last year (or was it two years ago), I proposed something like this when the student section wasn't being filled for conference games. It makes sense to make students who want tickets actually have to go claim them with an ID. Of course, this wouldn't actually be tickets that can be sold, but "unlocking" their ID for entrance to the game.

Keep this separate from the line for entering. I don't think your proposal solves the line problem (which I don't consider to be a problem). What it does is provide better information and information management for everyone involved.

And best of all, it allows for seats to be filled, last minute fans to be served, and the student section to be full when they sell GA tickets for the remaining seats in the student section.

So, your idea makes sense to me.

Not a bad idea.
Maybe have a max of 4-6 students/tent.
Scan all of their ID's when they arrive. (everybody who is associated with that tent must be present upon check-in)
Do random checks during the day and at least 50% of those ID's must be present at any given time.
Then come around at night and everybody must be present. (say between the hours of 10pm-7am)
If they fail any of the checks, their tent gets moved to the back of the line.
A couple hours before the doors open hand out wristbands and in order to get a wristband your ID must be one of the original ID's that was initially scanned. If people are present that weren't one of the original ID's, then they get moved to the back of the line.

On Monday I got in line at 5:20 and we were halfway up in the upper deck. This is the thing that irritates me. I mean it has been fine but as someone who goes to every game I shouldn't have to worry about just getting in. My friend I usually go with has class that goes till 6:30. I told him he is absolutely going to have to skip it to get in. I'm debating skipping my last class and going over around 3 when I get there from Gerdin.

I get why they oversell the tickets but that creates other problems.

My freshman year which was during Tim Floyd's last year (so a ****** team), my roommate had a Chem 165 test the night of the Kansas game. She took the test in 15 minutes, ran to Hilton, and was there before the game started. That story is worth more than whatever grade she got on that test.

Honestly, who cares about a stupid tent fire. No one was hurt. College students camping out before a game is fun.

I think the obvious answer here people is that we need to not allow tents and instead require only igloos. I have never seen an igloo burn down.
I second this. Also I think we should have a seal clubbing contest on the concourse.

I found this on the Chive... so it must be true...

That's a heck of a system. I like how the no heaters is almost an afterthought at the end. Although, maybe that shows it's just one of the more obvious rules there. We at least need to do that much here.

No heaters can be an after thought there...how often does the temperature get into the teens there, let alone single digits?

Heaters most definitley need to be banned...time to ask mom and dad for several blankets for Christmas and birthday presents...or maybe I can sell you my Western Mountaineering -15 degree sleeping bag that I haven't used since moving to the Southwest.

Just make sure that everyone knows the dangers of generators. Tragic story from a few years ago at the Iowa State fair was a tractor puller for some reason put the generator inside and ran it all night and killed him. He Wasn't thinking and these new generators are super quiet and maybe didn't think about emissions. Or maybe kids are thinking about it being stolen or something else.

It's a terrible idea to add another layer of bull **** students have to go through to go to the game.

Maybe they should do that for all season ticket holders. Everyone has to respond to a "Are you going to the game?" and if not they sell your seat.
