Not to disprespect, but if Carter is our starting '5' , we are in for a long year.
I think Ernst is the better option by far, but Carter has to play at some point or he'll never improve. I think we'll have options for offense so either player won't have to be a high usage offensive player to be effective.

Who loses a scholarship then? If Naz is back next year we don't have a scholarship for him.

One of three things will happen:

1. Monte goes to the NBA
2. Attrition elsewhere in the roster (i.e. somebody transfers out)*
3. Ashton goes back to walk-on status

Both of the first two things could happen.

*Not trying to speculate who will transfer out, just that it's pretty common in college basketball nowadays and it would seem to be the likely outcome if a top 125-type big man wants to come to ISU and there's no room for him otherwise, although Ashton going back to walk-on could make up for it. Just saying it's possible

Not really fair to Ashton. IMO he's earned it.

He's played what, 15-20 min in B12 play? This is for Prohm to decide.

Naz, Thomas, Cooke, Jackson and Long can all play the 2. We need a post player more than we need Ashton. I'm sure he's a nice kid and I appreciate what he's done so far but Prohm has a great opportunity to prove there was no drop off when Fred left, and a grad transfer post will help make that happen a lot more than adding another 2 guard to an already deep position.

Another scenario that could happen is that Naz returns in late February/March and finishes out his senior season. It is unlikely to happen however.

This isn't middle school. Playing very limited minutes because we went into this year with two open spots and we hve no other options isn't earning it. Prohm undoubtedly had this conversation before giving him the scholarship or this season.

We always forget Babb as well. He'll be in the rotation somewhere.

Morris probably wont leave. Who would transfer? Ernst? Ashton is averaging 12 mpg in conference play, not really walk on PT.

So even tho he's performed better than Cooke you take away his scholarship?

In a way, I hope that doesn't happen. It would probably take him several games to get back in game shape and not sure it would be worth the gamble with his hips. Team wise, he doesn't give us that extra 'big' that we could really use anyways. He would give us a better shot, but still don't think he would raise us from a top 15 team to a top 5 team.

I really think Malou is more than capable of guarding a 5 and it would allow us to go small. He's 6-9 so it's not like we'd be starting a 6-6/6-7 guy there. I watched a Yuba replay from about a week before he came to Iowa and Malou was posting up all game, guarding the other team's 5 and he was rebounding and blocking shots consistently. I don't know if we'll see him on the perimeter as much as I thought we would. His 3 point % dipped a bit this season at Yuba.

First of all, Cooke has had surgery and sat out, and will have two more years left to play! Ashton came to ISU as a walk-on and if not for losing incoming players, he's fortunate he got one this year. So yes, I'd think an expected walk-on should understand ...as if next year's walk-on status would flip with the one he was granted this year.

I agree he's grown from the SF role to a more full-time post player. He'll make ISU versatile in that we can go small, but I don't think it's the best option as a starting unit.

Edit- I also saw that last game at Yuba, fans will be really excited to see his play here. He showed a good development in his skillset in the post.
