I know I started a thread about a month ago discussing how other coaches have banned their players from social media during the season. I really think it's time for Coach Prohm to tell McKay and others (Monte posts all the time too) to delete their accounts until April. McKay has become a cancer to this team and is starting to remind me of another selfish player from last years team, BDJ.

Social Media Ban or No?

How about you let the coaches deal with it. If they want a ban, fine. But what dumb fans think is irrelevant.

I say no, but I don't follow any players or anyone for that matter on social media.

There are at least serious questions about whether it is even constitutional for a public university to ban some of its students from using social media.

This is a more fully-fleshed out discussion for the law nerds

No. Implement some sort of social media training for all student athletes and provide some guidance to them. Banning social media not only babies student athletes, but it could also be a turn off in recruiting.

No. Let the kids be kids. Don't ban them, just politely recommend they think before the hit submit which is something some people on here should do too.

If you want to establish trust with your players, you fully inform them of the negative consequences, but allow them to make their own decisions.

I would add that if the negative consequences come from the coaching staff or higher up the food chain, the consequences need to be fairly imposed. Code of conduct says they should not bring negative attention to the program or the university, I believe? Freedom of speech does not guarantee freedom from consequences.

I think that this is the correct answer and will be the future of how ADs dealing with social media. Social Media is WAY to big of a thing now to simply outlaw it.

As part of a previous job I helped develop social media training for the associates who represented our company through these outlets (rather large hotel firm). I think you can easily parlay something like this and give athletes guidelines as to how they use it when representing the team and university.

And there is training for them on this.

I think they have this. It's right after "Out of Touch Fan Interpretation of Athlete Social Media 101" at the Learning Annex on Tuesday nights.

how about we make them think certain ways as well...maybe monitor their television, web surfing, thinking...daily actions, movements...rename Ames to Oceania and call it good.

FFS, it's pretty simple...let the "kids" know when the step on campus that their social media actions, much like those actions that are much more egregious in nature, have consequences. Carefully spell out said consequences, illustrate through example how they manifest, and move on.

Yep, might as well just delete our accounts. No point in posting our opinions on a website for fans.

Wow..........the term "cancer" seems to be a bit of an overreaction in this case. Cancer kills things. I'd maybe use the term "distraction" but that's just me.

I guess part of being a collegiate athlete is hopefully learning some valuable life lessons. IMO, how to manage situations like social media is one of them. At some point they need to be grow up. Even if that does involve some momentary pain.

I say ban not.
