That is a really good point. The question may have specifically been about Naz being back. I still think it would have been easy (and obvious) to include Matt in that statement. And this isn't even close to the first time I've noticed it.

Monte could also easily be assuming that Thomas will play more at the 3 than the 2 next year (since that's a very likely result of Naz's return to the lineup). You're picking nits here.

Stupid thread, Thomas may lead this team in scoring next season and will primarily play the 3 spot, otherwise known as SF. Go away drama queen.

We are going to absolutely bomb away from 3 next year.

Monte (near 40% career)
Thomas (43% this year at high volume, only Buddy made more 3s among B12 players and he's gone)
Naz (near 40% career)
Burton (47% this year)
Malou (can stroke it in all game footage I've seen)

That's very possibly our most common lineup and doesn't even consider Jackson or Cooke who can also hit it. Jackson shot 40% at high volume in JC.

Matt Thomas had an incredible Junior year and, as Fran Fraschilla said repeatedly, he was probably the most improved player in the Big 12. He improved substantially on defense, 3 point shooting, ball handling, and driving the ball. There were a number of nights when he looked like the second best player on our team--including Friday night.

So when Monte talks about next season, why does he say: “I feel like with me and Naz in the backcourt we definitely would be one of the best backcourts in the country with two seniors?” Matt is a Senior, an all-conference selection and will be a part of that backcourt (Monte, Naz, AND Matt would all have to start on this team). To leave him out of that mention seems like a concerning slight to me.

Look, I LOVE Monte Morris! I live in Michigan and I love teasing my MSU and U of M friends about how awesome he is. I have no desire to stir anything up. I also know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this post. But I've considered posting this many times before because I've repeatedly noticed that Monte seems to not include Matt when he talks about contributions to this team. And it has seemed to me that Monte doesn't distribute the ball to Matt for wide open threes like Georges, Nader, Jameel, and Hallice do.

Georges is now gone from this team, so we are in serious need of leadership next year. Obviously Naz is the natural leader, but Monte could also provide good leadership for this team. But with leadership has to come humility and inclusion (two traits inherent in Georges and Naz). I want to see more of that from Monte.

Agree with you OP. Noticed it all year long.

lol. This is ridiculous...first I don't know if we see Matt in the back court next year much. He will be playing SF. He's 6'5 after all..he was just playing out of his natural position actually. Matt is a small wing. Not that he can't obviously he can but he's a good rebounder for his size so we would prob benefit more if he slid to the SF spot. I think next year we will see

MM/Jackson
Naz/Cooke/Long
Thomas/Bowie/Babb
Malou/Burton/Young
Unknown posts yet to be determined.

Monte was also asked these questions right after a season ending loss..do u expect him to just remember everyone?

Prob also see Jackson running of and Monte slides to SG a lot as well..Jackson can play folks. Maybe Bowie slides down to the 4 at times or plays the point forward role with Burton. Bowie is 6'7 but sounds like he is more of a really big guard.

I agree with the MT at 3 crowd. Monte was addressing the back court and not the entire make up. MT has some ups and I think is a solid all around player. Lord knows we could use someone with some savvy around the defensive basket to box out and keep the offensive rebounds down to a manageable amount. Much ado about nothing to me.

Three point shooters are the least of ISU problems next year. It's all about defense and post positions to make us whole again with Niang leaving. Not sure why we always have to discuss the current "psychology report" for players when nobody really knows whats going on behind the scenes. That's what Prohm is for and my humble opinion says he did a masterful job under extraordinary circumstances. I predict next years team to be more balanced winning more games. With returning players combined with recruits coming in I see a 25 + winner on the horizon. ISU's future is very bright despite the sadness of loss and saying goodbye to our incredible seniors. Keep the faith.
