I mowed for the first time this year on Wednesday. None of my neighbors have mowed yet. Now, I have quite a few dandelions visible in my yard, while my neighbors don't. Why is that?

I have roughly 3.5 acres on a hectare plot that was parceled out about 12 years ago. I believe the dandelions are a "good thing", as their presence is somewhat related to all the good topsoil being removed when homes were built here, and the dandelions will eventually restore the nutrient balance to the crap soil/clay that was left, but I just hate them.

Again, why do I have visible dandelions while my neighbors don't? Is it because their longer grass hasn't allowed them to pop out yet? It's probably too late to do anything about them now, as I think you want to hit them with a pre emergent, but is there anything reletively inexpensive I can do next year, or do I just allow the circle of life go on for awhile?

You can take care of dandelions any time during their growing season, but sooner is better than later. The longer you wait, the more seeds you'll have floating around, creating more plants (over and over and over all summer long). I'm not sure if there is a best option for such a large piece of land, such as yours. I have always had luck with Spectracide's products. I get a lawn spray for my yard and allow them a couple days to begin to die off, then hit ones I missed with a hand-spray bottle. Good luck! I hate those little bastards. They look pretty when yellow, but like any weed, they'll choke out the grass if you let them go to long.

If you can make 3.5 acres out of a hectare I would like to go into the land business with you. I'll take care of the dandelions.

Yeah...sorry. Wrong measurement. It's an area about 80-100 acres that has been chopped up into 3-5 acre lots. I meant hecta-acre.
