ImJustKCCLone, cyrocksmypants, CyclonesRGr8, and I have had a lot of conversations regarding horror movies recently and decided to open a dedicated Horror Movie Fans thread where we can all come discuss and share the movies we like in one of our favorite genres. As a starting point, why not start by posting some of our favorites and what sub-genre of horror we enjoy the most?

If it helps, here are a few sub-genres/characteristics off the top of my head:

1. Monster
2. Action-horror
3. Suspenseful
4. Jumpy
5. Creepy
6. Gross
7. Fantasy-Horror
8. Sci-fi horror
9. Found footage/fake documentary
10. Slasher
11. Foreign
12. Weird
13. Comedy-Horror
14. Torture

If I had to pick favorite genres, I would say Monster (zombies) and Sci-Fi horror. Not huge on Slasher films, torture, gross, or found footage but there's defintely some that I like within those genres. I'll try to avoid sharing the more known films (Friday the 13, Paranormal Activity, Saw, etc) and share some lesser known or obscure titles I enjoy, but feel free to discuss any and all horror movies.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Blood Creek - Nazi necromancers in America. Starring Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, and Dominic Purcell.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mJNYSV-OXc

Dead End - great horror comedy starring Lynn Shaye.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOKRauvfkUU

Frankenstein's Army - starring Karel Roden. This one has great, unique monsters and feels like a FPS video game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMUQ2IMuz8o

Saint - Dutch movie with Santa Claus as a zombie. If you liked Krampus and Rare Exports (also recommended Christmas horror movies), you'll definitely enjoy this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYCBKgzuNak

Re-Cycle - very imaginative visuals on this Hong Kong movie directed by the Pang Brothers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi8pWI-Q9dk

The Witch - newer movie, but undeniably creepy and depressing. Must watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gud8viI-P7Q

I Sell The Dead - starring a who's who of horror movies. This one is also a comedy and well made.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIQ-xcI1zKQ

I'll post a few more in the coming days as I remember more of them.

My favorites would have to be:

-creepy/supernatural
-monster
-horror/comedies
-weird
-foreign
-cheesy B movies

Least favorite by far is gore porn/torture, but also not a huge fan of slasher flicks (other than the classics).

I don't know if I can list a bunch of my favorites. My all time favorite is probably The Descent, but I'm going to have to pull up my Netflix to just get some I've watched recently that I've enjoyed for one reason or another.

Some I've recently watched that I've enjoyed.

-A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night: an Iranian vampire film. Not so much scary but cinematically beautiful, funny at times and suspenseful at times. Subtitled.

-Circle: this was a GTO recommendation. More thriller/suspense.

-Ava's Possessions: a horror comedy about a girl that was possessed and her life after possession (it likens it to AA and 12 steps). Entertaining watch.

-Alone With Her: more of a psychological thriller about a guy that becomes obsessed with a girl. Not a bad flick and Colin Hanks is solid in it.

-Zombeavers: exactly as it sounds. Total horror comedy abou zombie beavers. A good time if you're wanting laughs.

-Odd Thomas: more like a comedy thriller about a guy that can see dead people and uses that power to solve mysteries.

-Contracted: this one I guess is kind of zombie movie? It's really hard to explain without giving away the plot. But it's not much on horror action and more based on the following of a girl that's gotten infected with.....something.....and you follow her progression. It managed to get me really emotionally invested with the girl with everything she goes through.

-Ring of Curse: a supernatural revenge movie from Japan.

-Monsters: I suppose a monster movie, but it's more about the emotional journey of two people trying to get through a post-takeover earth.

-John Dies at the End: based on a novel. More of a mind-bending suspense/thriller dark comedy. Really hard to explain, but I loved it.

WHAR CREATURE FEATURES?????

These guys know I love the dorky creature features...snakes, bats, sharks, octopi, spiders, dinosaurs...

Don't really like the combo-creatures, though.

Some (like Jaws) are exceptional all around. Others (like 2-headed Shark Attack) are dorky enough to laugh through. Some (like Sharknados 1, 2 & 3) I can't even laugh at (sorry, Pants!)

I'm not a fan of slashers, torture porn, and the cinematography and dialogue of most "found" footage films is too herky-jerky for me to enjoy it. There are exceptions, but for the most part I don't care for those genres.

My classifications are kind of nebulous, but these are films that I have watched more than once and enjoyed each time. A couple of them are OLD (early 60's early 70's...gasp!) but still good for a sit-down. I think the original Alien did an amazing job of building tension and fear without a lot of gore (well, there was that chest-bursting thing, but still...). Same with The Thing...just don't laugh at the computer chess game! "Them" is as hokey as you can get, but I still love it. There is a cold room alarm in my building that sounds exactly like "them" and it makes me think of the movie every time I hear it. :) Some of them are played for laughs, some have really poor acting, and yes - I realize that Quarantine 1 & 2 are "found footage", but I DID say there are exceptions.

Creature features
Arachnophobia
Bats
The Breed
Eight-Legged Freaks
Fangs
Jaws
Primeval
Rogue
Slither

Horror
Black Water
The Cave
The Crazies
Cube
Cube 2: Hypercube
Cube Zero
The Descent
Dog Soldiers
The Faculty
Ghost Ship
Lost Boys
Quarantine
Quarantine2: Terminal
The Ruins
Splinter
The Thing

Although they do have some horror elements, I classify these more as
Sci Fi
Alien
Aliens
(not a big fan of the other two sequels)
The Colony
Ghosts of Mars
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the remake with Brooke Adams & Donald Sutherland)
Leviathan
Them
They Live ("I'm here to kick *** & chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubblegum." How can anyone resist dialogue like that!?!?!?)
Virus

The Descent was great. If I had to pick an all time favorite movie, I would say Event Horizon, The Thing, In the Mouth of Madness, or Dawn of the Dead (either Romero or Snyder work for me).

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and Ava's Posessions are in my queue, but I haven't watched them yet. I really enjoyed Odd Thomas and John Dies at the End. Contracted was pretty entertaining and it even has a sequel (Contracted:phase II), which was just okay. Zombeavers was a riot!

I've seen all of these. Huge props for Dog Soldiers, great werewolf movie that sadly not many people have watched. I love some sci-fi horror. Would you guys classify Prometheus and Pandorum as sci-fi horror?

I would. They go for more "other-worldly" vibe than pure horror.

Dog Soldiers I found by accident. I was actually looking for another movie someone had mentioned, "Last of the Dogmen"...NOT a horror flick. It's about a group of Cheyenne still living free in the mountains of Montana, and their accidental exposure to "modern" society. That movie is from the nineties.

And yes, it's a bit gorier than I normally prefer, but I love the interaction between the main three characters: McKidd, Pertwee & Cunningham (old Ser Davos himself!).

Babadook is one of my favorite movies, regardless of genre. I really enjoyed The Witch and the first Insidious. The spiritual genre is taking over zombie for most overdone genre

I don't watch horror movies. Watched The Birds when I was a little kid and wouldn't go outside without an umbrella for several weeks and I don't think that is even a horror movie.

It's a horror movie. :)

Similar story. My parents were out with my sisters at youth group. I watched this by myself (I was around 12 or 13). It was nighttime. When they got home I was huddled on the couch with the dog, and every single light in the house was on. ;)

Scared the crap out of me. And my brothers would make bird noises every time we went outside. I think it got me because unlike zombies or witches or whatever, birds are real things that actually exist.

This isn't a movie, but has anybody watched Outcast the new series on Cinemax? It's another Robert Kirkman created comic/series but this one deals with demonic possession and exorcism. I just watched the pilot this morning and I thought it was interesting. Disturbing in parts, but I think this could be a good watch.

I believe you can watch the pilot in Cinemax.com or YouTube for free.

The Audition is an over the top creepy but very good Japanese horror movie.

I've always loved Cabin Fever even though it has a lot of teen horror cliches.

The original Alien is in my ten five of all movies and feels like a horror movie for most of the way.

Audition bored me to tears. I think by the time anything happened I was just wishing it was over. Another Miike movie is Ichi the Killer. It's pretty weird.

I've always looked at Cabin Fever like a satire on horror. With scenes like this what else could it be?

I haven't seen Audition yet. It's always toward the top of horror movie lists, but I just haven't brought myself to watch it yet. A Tale of Two Sisters is another Japanese horror movie I hear a lot about that I really need to watch.

I didn't like The Babadook at all. Not that there's anything wrong with you liking it. I feel like the horror genre, more than any other genre, is the most subjective because there's so many subgenres of it. Like, I understand The Babadook was a heavy symbolism for deep and dark depression, but I felt like the ending went all awry. The creator had to make a choice by continuing with their symbolism of making an actually great film, and they decided to stick with the symbolism. I don't know. I just left the film feeling very disappointed. Especially with the last ten minutes. I actually laughed at it when she went into the basement at the end.

Haven't seen the Babadook, but The Witch was amazing.

I also liked Insidious, but was dissapointed that they gave no credit to HG Wells. It just happens to be that I've read a lot of HG Wells and Insiduous borrows from one of his more obscure short stories called The Stolen Body. Not the whole thing, but a lot of how the ghosts try to posess living human beings bodies and what everything looks like in the realm of the dead. It was all I could think about as I finished watching it the first time. I've re-watched it since and looked for a mention of HG Wells anywhere in the beginning or closing credits, but found nothing. Here is the short story, if you're so inclined to read it and let me know what you think.
