Same old offense?

This may have its own thread already but the ISU offense looked like the it has been the last couple of years. Same formations, same plays, same issues. How many times does the Read Option have to be run and not work before the OC gives up on it? Also, it didn't look like play action was used off of it either. If read option was called 25 times, then the setup for play action is there. Then there were the bubble screens again. Fine, use that a couple of times to bring the corners up tighter so that it leave the long ball open. Routes seemed to be the same, not much across the middle unless it was way down field. Tight ends were not used and a lack of a power running game wasn't there. Please line up under center a few times a game. Let the RB get some acceleration going before the ball is handed off, then maybe the window to hit the hole is still there by the time they get to the line.

I know its new staff with a first time OC, but the offense looked much like it did in years past in regards to formations and play calling.

IMO, it looked worse than it did towards the end of last season. I feel like we're back to no identity. We did have 2 player collide in the backfield, so that was a new wrinkle.

Some miscommunication like that will happen with new coaches and new plays. Like the first Lanning int, that will happen with new system. The second int was just a lack of getting it out of bounds the way a QB is suppose to.

IMO, there was good stuff happening that I haven't seen. The pass protection was better then before and we were running the ball, it just seemed like the refs did not like us running 10-15 yards so they would pull us back another 10-15 yards. I fully predicted that this would happen. Listen, this is a brand new staff with young players starting and a new coordinator trying to find his identity with this team. I wouldn't look into this offense to much this week. Now if it is 1 or 2 years down the road and this happens still, we have a problem but give these guys a break. Greatness doesn't happen over just a couple weeks.

I was surprised we didn't ever throw to a tight end, and that we didn't get a little more creative in the running game knowing our offensive line is a weakness. I was also thinking we would throw some quick hitters to the WRs to gain some short yardage in place of running the ball...like Texas Tech and Baylor do.

I'm surprised that there wasn't a thread made prior to halftime titled "why don't we use our TEs in the passing game?"

People have been ******** on the offensive scheme/play calling since the days of Clay Stapleton. I don't disagree with some (like where was the TE and what happened to running Warren more effectively on Sat. night), but if the plays were run successfully, made yards, without penalties and stupid mistakes, (whatever the call), nobody would be criticizing.

the new offensive strategy includes going deep early and often. toledo fans actually complained about that sometimes. that is the biggest difference I noticed. Looks pretty similar to the offense ran at toledo. would have liked to see more power formations but we were reallt efficient at scoring when we had a chance so thats good so far.

finally nothing has changed as we still connot sustain long drives. that is a carry over from rhoads that i am sure the staff is trying to fix. honestly i dont remeber decent sustained drives since herman and even then it was few and far between.

Every year there is talk about formations and plays. There are only so many ways you can legally line up, and only so many ways you can run a play. I'm not sure what some of you expected to see.

I expected to see a WIN over thee university of nothing important................

Run/Pass/Option. RPO. It's a great tool for offenses to control players. The QB can read any Defensive lineman or linebacker on any given play. The offense essentially doesn't have to block 1 defensive player. If the QB sees leverage on bubble or on the single receiver side, he has the option to throw. This offense will not go away. Most fans don't know about these things. RPOs when executed are tough to defend. This is going to be the key for success at ISU. A consistent coaching staff. An o coord who stays for more than 1 year. How can you expect great execution, 100% of the time when the o coord position is a revolving door. Football takes time. If fans want a good product on Saturdays, keep Coach Campbell in Ames for 10 years. He's a winner. Lanning will improve. Warren will get it going.

What the **** kind of offense are we supposed to run when all your QB is "good at" is running?

Just because you use the read option doesn't mean it's exactly the same offense.
