There are definitely variations in sets and formations, but they do basically what Iowa does on offense. They beat Iowa at Iowa's game today, in Iowa's house. Good for them. Love their coach.
Absolutely agree. I watched NDSU beat K-State 3 years ago, and was blown away they could beat the Old Man at his own game in his own house (with his own name on it!). Was not as surprised that Ferentz could be beaten - we've seen that happen a few times, but the surprise was more that this year's I-Hawk squad is by far the best FBS team NDSU has ever played. At least on paper.
Living in MN, I've seen plenty of NDSU games. One thing I have always noticed is each players willingness to continue accelerating right through the point of impact. Their running backs in particular will put their head down, accelerate into their opponent, bounce, spin, and resume running in north-south, downhill fashion. It is equally awed by their fundamental simplicity, as I am at their consistent results.
Footnote:
From what I understand, this was the final game they will ever play against the an FBS team. That would mean Iowa State, in CPR year 1, would go into the history books as the last FBS team to ever beat NDSU. Not worth, but a fact nonetheless.
