It would have been huge all-around for Simeon to work out. Would've helped with class balance, and they could've done more building for the future in the offseason last year instead of having to go after a big guy like Holden. But...that's how it goes. Solomon is working out, and 1 out of 2 recruits at their level working out isn't bad.

Does anybody recall if Prohm went after any sit-out big men that year in addition to Babb? That would have been huge, but we got a late start on transfers. If we would have reeled in Stapleton that might have kept us from taking Bowie, and put us in better shape for this upcoming year.

Agreed. He would have probably been more sought after if he was eligible immediately or had 2 years to play.

I have a feeling he is going to be a beast.

His per possession production was Deonte-like.

He is really good at drawing fouls and hitting free throws.

He was a poor fit in UVA's offense, so he should blossom in a more uptempo system and a year to work on his game before going all-out as a senior.

Hopefully that Bennett-drilled tough defense will not leave him, either.

He will be a great power guard to pair with Wigginton the year after next.

We get one like him per year (not needing transfer classes of destiny all of the time) and the kind of prep classes that Prohm can land... either under-the-radar (such as Solomon and hopefully McNeill) and heralded (Wiggi, Lewis) and we will be set.

Not trying to start a Fred v. Prohm war, but maybe the era of Transfer U is going away a little.

And that is okay -- long as we have good players, I care very little where they came from.

I don't care what anyone says- Shayok is a top tier transfer.

I think he's a top tier talent for sure, not a top tier transfer considering he's sit 1 play 1. I'll be surprised if he scores less than 13 PPG next year.

There isn't any blame to put on Fred. Did Fred blame McDermott for not leaving him anyone for his 3rd year? That is not how it works, especially in a sport where it takes one class to turn a program around. In addition, Prohm has two more spots to fill in this class due to Morris and Long being here a year longer than he thought he would have them. There are years where things just fall that you have 6 or 7 spots to fill and that is just college basketball. I just don't understand this thinking that Fred should have planned the roster out and head Prohm set up for year 3??!! that is asinine and makes no sense at all.
Never said that he should have set Prohm up for year 3. But stopping recruiting for the last year does not help anybody.

The most he could have done was treat his departure like TJ did. You can say you are uncertain on your return, but continue to do your job as if you are 100% returning.

I don't put all the blame on Fred. And Prohm hasn't done anything wrong yet, so there may not be anything to "blame". But I think people have the right to be upset with how Fred finished his recruiting here.

I don't know if Transfer U is going away, but Kansas certainly is trying to claim it.

I love Ames and everything Iowa State.

But I think it'd be really fun to live in Vegas as a 20 year old kid. Especially for only a year or so.

And doubly so for a student athlete :D
I'm not sure why people think it would great to be a college bball player at UNLV. Do you think anyone in Vegas cares about some kid that plays on a bottom half MWC team?
An athlete at a good power conference team lives a charmed life. Some of the trappings that make Vegas heaven to the typical middle aged loser are plentiful and free for a kid playing bball in a traditional college town at a good school.

You're putting too little blame on Fred, just as many are putting too much blame on Fred.

So...maybe everyone should just agree that it's "the situation" that is to blame. Prohm getting hired very late as the Bulls *****-footed around, only Darien Williams as a recruit who decommited (before the Prohm hire) ,Tsalmpouris left, and most transfers had already selected new schools. Prohm had to try to do what he could do to fill a roster so late with Ernst, Carter, and sit out Babb. So now we're playing catchup still, yet 'hoping' to keep the NCAA streak alive next season. Not going to be easy, and if we don't make the dance, I don't think its Prohm's fault any more than Fred's.....its just the situation.

"What a bush league thing to do. It will blow up in their face eventually." :D

Self must have an autographed picture of Fred up in his office or something.

I think I have seen him chanting "WWFHD" a few times during games, too.

No the Bulls are now his problem, and it might be a problem that he cannot solve.

In terms of Prohm, he should have avoided the grad transfer last year and probably bit the bullet and focused more on 2 sit out out guys. It would have angered the masses but it would have avoided having to fill 7 this year. You end up with a shorter bench, but at some point you have to bite the bullet, balance the classes out no matter how painful. Just waited a year too long to do it.
I will never fault a coach for trying to win ASAP. Never.

To the discussion of 2017-18, it is. Try as much as you can, but this thread was never about Fred's ledger.
Thanks for assuming that I'm trying and for also thinking a thread stays on a defined topic.

Thanks for assuming that I think a thread stays on a defined topic, but going tangential wasn't the issue. Yes, we all think it was great to hire Hoiberg. It's also true he's largely the reason we needed to have a great spring.

It's hard to say Fred didn't recruit. If he had stayed, we likely would have kept the Greek and Williams, while landing Diallo, Bridges, and Coffeey among others.

It's normal for overturn and decommits with coaching changes, do you not know anything about college basketball?

Fred was never getting Bridges but he would have gotten the others listed

Fred would not have gotten Bridges or Diallo.

He probably would have landed Coffey, but we were never getting Bridges/Diallo.
