I know that in Muscatine where I grew up, it was popular to put american or cheddar cheese on apple pie
Muscatine sounds like a strange place.I know that in Muscatine where I grew up, it was popular to put american or cheddar cheese on apple pie
Wait...like together? As in, you're eating a bowl of chili with a cinnamon roll next to it?Looks gross. I'll stick to chili and cinnamon rolls as my Iowan tradition.

Lived in Iowa for nearly 4 decades and I've never tried it...am I the weird one?

Yes, pretty much every public school in Iowa does this. It has been an Iowa thing for decades. If you grew up in Iowa you more than likely had a cinnamon roll with Chili and probably chicken soup too all through school. It is for sure an Iowa thing.Wait...like together? The cinnamon roll is my bowl.

1. That's disgusting.
2. I've lived in Iowa my whole life and never have I ever had a cinnamon roll with chili. Our soups at school came with crackers. Cinnamon rolls are a breakfast item. If we were going to have something sweet with it, we were probably getting a blonde brownie or a pumpkin bar.
Quick Google search shows me it's a midwest type thing. I guess Runza restaurants serve chili and cinnamon rolls. That's just weird as hell to me.
Yeah I do think its a midwest thing, I think many states claim it. But I will say this every person I know from IA, especially in my area and other rural areas it is a thing. We have crackers too and all that, we always had cinnamon rolls with chilli, and I think all the area schools do it. Like I said I think its more of a Rural thing. Which to be fair we also have afternoon "lunch" usually with Coffee and rolls or other deserts too, which I think is a rural farmer thing.1. That's disgusting.

To me growing up it was breakfast, dinner, lunch, supper. Having "lunch" at school never made sense to me.

The cheese on a pop tart is BS he even admits it is in the article. If it's just a Rural thing, then it's definitely not every public school in Iowa.
I've lived in Central Iowa my entire life and I've never heard of it.
Might be good, but I didn't know it was a thing.
Oh and this cheese on a poptart thing it complete BS. Sounds like something the weird kid in the dorms who never left his room except to go to class would eat. I don't think that guy even showered or went to the dining hall.
I've never heard of them, are there any around Iowa? I did see something that maybe Wendy's was going to have chili and cinnamon rolls too, not sure if they ever did or not.Did someone mention Runza? Best "sandwich" ever.
I was born and raised in Iowa and went to one completely rural school district and another small town school district and I never heard of it until this thread. And honestly you are the first 2 people from Iowa that I've ever met that have never heard of it. While I know maybe not all try it, or not all schools do it, I think the majority do, and thought everyone has heard of it, especially in Iowa.
I honestly have never met a person from Iowa that grew up here that has never heard of it. I just have had a long debate from someone who moved here from out of state and said on FB it doesn't go together, but I think all the Iowans there also said it was a thing.
I guess its interesting to know that some don't know of this. I would be interested to know if it is only the Urban areas that don't do this or know about it.
Which in Iowa there are not too many urban areas.
