He kind of threw her under the bus as well when he said that "living with the mother of his child" was one of his reasons to blaze up. Things might be a little chilly on the home front after that quote.
It's an odd set of circumstances all the way around. I'm sure he figured he'd sit out his one game, we'd get our ass handed to us in Norman, and everyone would be pounding on the table for him to get back on the field. Unfortunately for him, his replacement went and won the biggest game in program history and while there was always debate, it was no longer cut and dried that the team was better with him on the field. Noland's emergence added another layer between him and the starting job. I'm not on twitter but would have to assume a message board would be a decent indicator of what was being said, and for the most part, he had a great deal of support from people that went well beyond worrying about his football prowess. I have no doubt that there were anonymous a-holes spouting off, but the majority of what I saw was very supportive. If anything the whole thing was shrouded in silence and left people wondering more than sniping.
I can see him transferring and not wanting to spend his last year being a backup. If he hadn't chosen the matches and gas can method of departure, I have no doubt that he would have had almost nothing but well wishes from this fan base. Saying we didn't support him blah blah blah isn't going to get him any sympathy on the way out and I have to think there are some awkward moments to come if he has to stick around another semester to graduate.
And my final "get off my lawn" moment...Jake, it's time to grow up. You got a girl pregnant and are stressed out. Wow, there's something nobody has ever had to go through before! The only difference is that most college kids that go through it don't have private tutors to help with their school work and access to meals and everything else they can imagine through a D1 football program. They have a helluva lot more to worry about than lifting and blowing off meetings with their coach. If you're having trouble being a father now, just wait until you have to be a dad. For the sake of that child, her mother, and yourself, you better find a much better coping mechanism than dope and blaming others. If you think the world is cruel now, just wait until you're not a star QB anymore.
Good luck to you.
