Feel free to wring your hands and worry that Ohio State has no other option than to go with Campbell. I personally think that while he probably is on their 'list' they're going for a bigger fish.

Do those fish have names?

Chris Petersen and David Shaw are okay ideas, but I don't know if they would want somebody with only West Coast/Mountain West ties like those two.

Any Midwestern, ACC, or SEC guys jump out at you?

Yep, Kevin Wilson should be able to step in better than Fickell did.

I'd imagine Bob Stoops will get a call and turn it down.

No so fast: Pretty sure Stoops loves an ego boost.

And Shaw is a Stanford guy so I doubt he leaves for any school.

It has happened twice. Earl Bruce and Sam Willaman (the coach who brought Jack Trice to Iowa State) both left Iowa State for Ohio State.

And three head coaches have left Iowa State and soon won national championships: Earl Bruce, Johnny Majors, and Gene Chizik. Ames is the cradle of championship coaches.

You could also add Mack Brown and Pete Caroll who were both assistants at ISU early in their careers. I'm not sure how I feel about having 5 coaches who won National Championships in Ames and still sucking as bad as we have the last 20+ years.

Not exactly sure.
Why would OSU need a clean coach? After Tressel they got U.M. Meyer didn't have a snow white image when he arrived. Gene Smith is still the A.D. right? He cares about winning and himself making money IIRC. So he could go after someone like the dude at Louisville who crashed while having an affair with an assistant coachs wife. Petrino i think.

Fickel
Stoops

Just off the top of my head list regardless of where they are.

So it's been what, an hour since McMurphy broke the story? Weird that there's no mention of the story whatsoever yet on the ESPN or SI websites. Not even so much as a Breaking News blurb.

I think he tweeted out a preview of the story but the whole story hasn't been published yet.

I assume they have to spend more time corroborating the information since McMurphy is an independent journalist.
