I'd say! That is an awesome list, and Red Rocks back to back sprinkled in is a nice touch haha

Heading out to my first concert at Red Rocks to see Shakey Graves at the end of the month. Twin Peaks is opening up for him, and I am pumped to see them. Saw them at the Blue Moose in Iowa City awhile back, and even though the audio in that place is terrible, I was into them. Jose Gonzalez & The Brite Lites are also playing.

Super pumped to get out there. For people who have been out there, any recommendations?

If you're able... the perfect seat at Red Rocks is Row 38. The sound system is focused around dead-center row 38. It's worth getting there early just to get to those seats.

Saw Justin Townes Earle a few weeks ago with the Sadies. He's still better when it's just him with a small rhythm pieces like upright bass and fiddle or solo but the Sadies fit him well.

They are a perfect backing band (and great on their own as well).

Recently saw We Banjo 3 and Ghost of Paul Revere (separate shows) both are great live. Trampled by Turtles, Lord Huron, and Lissie tomorrow at the MN State Fair! Shakey Graves at Palace theater at the end of the month, Caamp in November, Charlie Parr and Ghost of Paul Revere in November. I think that is it right now.

He pops up on some of my Spotify stations now and then. I like his covers of Can't Hardly Wait and Graceland.

He's a treat to watch play guitar when he's working hard. Travis picking but with some form of muting too.

A review once said he looped his guitar playing. That ain't looping.

Yuma, Midnight at the Movies and The Good Life are his best imo.

Anyone else going to see Shakey Graves on Sunday for Nitefall? It got moved to Brenton Skating Plaza - I've never been to a show there, is it as hard to get a good spot if you're not wicked early as it is at Simon Estes?

Jealous again of the Iowa's embarrassment of Shakey Graves riches.

I've seen Twin Peaks, his opener that night. They really know how to rock the place. I couldn't turn away while they were playing to a half filled venue.

Fun Fact for no other reason than I found it cool:
They are a Chicago band. Turns out the two people who started the Twin Peaks band, were a part of the 5 students who got 10 day suspensions from Jones College Prep HS for smoking Marijuana. 1 of the other three people who served the suspension, Chancellor Bennett. Better known as Chance the Rapper who created his first mixtape, 10 Day, on that very suspension.

I'm definitely excited for Twin Peaks, also (I'm a huge Shakey fan - third time seeing him!). I knew about that story in relation to Chance, but I didn't know that the TP members were also a part of it!

Yeah, either did I haha. Only learned of it when I saw them back in the winter.

Not really any more connection between them from what i can tell. But kind of a small world that 3 of the 5 kids in that group that got suspended for smoking are all doing successful things in music, already. haha

Didn't know anything about them so I listened to the first song that showed up on a YouTube search which was The Night We Met. Sounded really familiar so I skimmed the comments and saw a lot of people referencing season 2 but not what show it was on. Quick google search showed me it was on an episode of 13 Reasons Why (yeah I watched it and enjoyed it too big whoop wanna fight about it). Definitely going to check them out some more. Any suggestions for songs I should definitely listen to?

Decoration Day was from his days with the Truckers but that's just one song. He was with them for a few years.

Solo stuff honestly I was mainly into Sirens of the Ditch and JI and the 400 Unit and lost track after that. He's grown in popularity in the last 5-6 years which is very much well deserved, but I didn't enjoy the music as much. Was definitely not bro country but just wasn't the same.

Absolutely rugged on the guitar when he wants to be. Before sobriety he'd have a bottle of whiskey up on stage with him. In both phases I've seen him directly kick people out of the show for being dipshits, so I love that about him along with a great story of getting himself together.
Started listening to Jason right after our exchange and haven't stopped. He will definitely be a permanent fixture in my rotation. First video is what I listened to initially and the second is the one I've listened to the most by far. He looks a little different these days than he did in those early days with Drive-By Truckers :) I'm not good at guitar like at all but I enjoy messing around with it and I've been doing my best with Decoration Day lately. Great song. Thanks for the recommendation!

Cool!

He's come a long ways since even 10 years ago. Poster child for what sobriety can do for your health. Songs like Dec. Day are far from complex, but there's a certain level of filth that he plays it with in that clip that would be really hard to replicate.

Sadly since his popularity has gone up, the crowd has been less than enthusiastic for the classics.

Well I definitely plan on seeing him live at some point and I will go nuts for Decoration Day. How often does he come around Iowa or at least within a few hours drive of the Ames area?

Not sure...I'd assume by now he'd maybe play in a good sized theater in Des Moines or so if he comes through the midwest.

Get yourself some early Justin Townes Earle while you're at it. :) Saw him with the Sadies in August and enjoyed it. Still prefer him with just a three piece or by himself...talk about impossible to replicate....but the Sadies rule so that was fine.

I like She Lit a Fire and Ends of the Earth. Pretty much all of the Lonesome Dreams album is good stuff.
