Definitely RDR and TLOU, hands down. Both games did a great job of building emotional attachment to characters and the overall story; they were almost like less of games and more of storytelling. Witcher 3 and a little bit of Elder Scrolls games seem similar in that respect as well.

I've also developed a small connection with a few Mario games (Galaxy and Odyssey come to mind). The level design, charm, attention to detail, etc. of those worlds tend to draw me in to playing them. I think Nintendo does a great job of adding depth to those otherwise similar and basically-repeated storylines.

Demon Souls, not a sadness but tears of joy because I beat it without using help. Never felt such an accomplishment as beating that game for the first time.

Ocarina of Time brings a twinkle to my eyes reminiscing about simpler times in my life.

Super Mario Brothers - rescuing the princess over and over only to find out it wasn't her and the real princess was in another castle. Also, finishing the game with Luigi only to realize that he would not be getting any piece of that action. Sad.

Yeah, this is me after pretty much any Zelda game. Wait, Link went to all that work for a platonic friend?

The feelings I had playing WoW Classic with my best friends back in 2004/2005 I don't think I'll ever have again.
Yep, you can't go back to how it felt just entering that world. I migrated to WoW from Shadowbane with a PvP crew that had been together for a few years. Discovering a new world with those people was so much fun.

Of course, that game turned me from a PvPer to a raider, which kind of stinks, but oh well, it had to happen at some point. And keeping a tank off his back is loads easier than keeping someone up in PvP.

Edit: and going back to emotional involvement, I was always partial to Jaina. Every attempt at peace on her part went south. Between losing Arthas, her father dying, all of Theramore being pretty much razed. She's had it tough. I've been reading some of the lore around the new expansion that just dropped, and I'm pretty happy to see her finally saying "Screw this, I'm not ******* around this time." If I had time to play, I'd probably even resub. But who has time, lol?

Way up there
I get way in to my dynasties on NCAA '14 and College Hoops 2k8. I have school records, dozens of season worth of stats/scores, award winners and a Hall of Fame. I have a couple files on my pc that I've been updating for years to keep track of all of this stuff. Why....who knows!

DO NOT read into it. Just set aside 3 hours and dive in. It's free on Steam. It's manga like and you might feel weird playing it but 100k+ Reviews rate it 10/10 so I am not joshing you. Lots of reading but well well worth it. Plus it's a choose your adventure type game so there are some different endings which makes it replayable

All of you easily affected by emotion in video games, do NOT play That Dragon, Cancer... unless you have tissues at the ready. I'm not going to even blame my tears on onions, that game was a gut punch.

I've been meaning to try this, but I'm always put off by the cutesy anime style, plus I don't want Steam to start recommending the deluge of other visual novel games they have on the service if I do dare to try this game one day.

I got the worst ending in Witcher 3, and for maybe my favorite game of all time it was as attached as I’ve been to characters so it hit pretty hard. I thought about my bad decisions and the results for days. It’s the only game that made me consider my actions outside the game.

A good choice. Most a AAA game has sucked me in. Helps that it's paired with a truly excellent book series.

Journey really hit me hard - especially considering it doesn't take a huge investment of time/energy/thought to play. Finished it and sat in a dark room for like an hour pondering life.

I was years late to Journey but it was freaking fantastic. Best exclusive on the PS3?

This War of Mine is supposed to be that way. I started playing it, but it was too damned dreary. Should have listened to the reviews lol.

This one made me feel bad for trying to win!

Not previously mentioned but Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is excellent as well. Though even if playing on PC, make sure you have a controller to use.

So apparently in the first Walking Dead, Telltale originally didn’t have Lee in it, as it was a brother/sister story, but they wanted the dynamic of two strangers instead. Then they almost completely cut Clementine out of it because they were worried that players wouldn’t like her.

Kinda crazy as, without those two and the dynamic they had with each other, it would have almost assuredly been a flop with no sequels.

Also, apparently the voice of Clementine, a little black girl, is a middle aged white woman.

Firewatch was a game that really painted a vivid picture through story telling. Definitely made you care about the characters. Even ache for them at some times.

And then, once SMB 2 comes out, you realize that those first 7 "Princesses" were actually dudes . . .
