They got a first down, but ISU forced a punt after maybe 4-6 plays and SDSU might have gotten 15ish total yards? I could be off on some of those numbers though, I had been drinking since 1pm.

On offense, we got forced into a 3rd and long situation but Kempt made a nice pass to Butler for the 1st down. A play or two later is when Jones caught a pass and went 55 yards for the TD. It looked like SDSU was selling out on stopping the run and basically going to make Kempt throw. Kempt obliged and made the 1st series look easy.

Basing this off 4 mins of play, but I think if the game never got called off, ISU woulda won going away. Something like 40ish to 13ish.

OL run blocking looked just like last year or worse, but thankfully it was a VERY VERY small sample, and against a stacked box too.

Oddly it was a better 5 minutes than ISU has played in many of their first games in previous seasons.

Probably correct. Trying to remember -- on the flipside, didn't ISU look good early in at least one of those UNI losses and the NDSU loss? Seems like the team appeared unstoppable early in the game, but didn't continue it.

The week 1-2 improvement may be more myth than real, however, coaches like the first actual game to make tweeks in their formations, schemes, and players. This was traditionally why you scheduled a cupcake for your first game. If your more talented team struggled with something, it could be watched on film later and corrected. We will be doing this on the fly next Saturday now.

I know at least vs. NDSU.

Basically the more fundamentally sound teams won those games.

Could be wrong but I feel more confident in the current staff to keep things tight and prepared.

OL run blocking looked just like last year or worse, but thankfully it was a VERY VERY small sample, and against a stacked box too.

SDSU had everyone at the LOS to start the game and DM got smothered for a 2 yard loss. The OL didn't do a ton, but when the safety is standing in front of the LBers it is going to be tough to run. It also can afford a huge play which we saw four plays later. DM also broke free for a moment on his second carry and had a nice 10 yard run, that could have been more if he would have broke the last tackle. 5 plays with one going 55 yards on a bubble screen is a pretty small sample to look at in terms of OL play. Cancelling sucked for the fan and players. I think these coaches do an amazing job of evaluating players in practice, so the only thing I am really concerned about is how the young guys play under the bright lights.

You will find many coaches who disagree with that notion- it has become more myth than fact. This quote came to life in the 80's and 90's when the off season was not what it is today and before the season became more than spread out. Teams CAN improve the most during that week but with the bye week becoming what is has over the past 5 years, I think we can put the week 1 and 2 improvement thing to bed. Teams get much better, yes they do but to say it is when the most improvement comes is now widely disputed.

Let me put it a different way for you...it is far far better to have played a game then to have not played a game. And its not close...big problem for ISU IMO this week.

It did look like ISU had advantages physically all over. Would have been nice to get at least a half in and really know.

Can someone provide some details of the game? How did the defense look? Did we have more than 3 Plays?

Going by memory, but the defense looked pretty solid, their first play was a screen pass that was dropped, but would have been a 5 yard loss if it was caught. Second was a short run, maybe 3 yards, third was a nice screen pass that barely got the first down. They had a couple of short runs and then went back to pass and got a lot of pressure on the QB, he ended up throwing a pass that was not caught and would have been out of bounds.

On offense ISU started with a run be DM, which was stuffed pretty badly for a 2 yard loss, second play was a screen pass that didn't gain anything. Had a little too much air under the pass because of rush. Third and 12 was a really nice pass to Butler over the middle for 21 yards. Forth play was DM run up the middle for 11, 5th was the TD. Get the feeling that the game would have gotten way out of hand in the first half. ISU just looked like they couple do whatever they wanted on offense.

looks like Cyclones.tv will be posting something at 8:30 tonight based on their tweet today.

Based on how I remember it...

2 & 10 (25) SDSU pass complete, dumped off to RB for 10 yds to 35 yd line (tackle Rose)
1 & 10 (35) SDSU run, +2 yds to 37 (tackle by Lima)
2 & 8 (37) run +2 yds to 39 (tackle Uwazurike)
3 & 6 (39) pass incomplete
4 & 6 (39) punt 44 yds to ISU 17 (fair catch by Milton)

1 & 10 (17) run by DM, -2 yds
2 & 12 (15) pass complete to Jones 0 yds
3 & 12 (15) pass complete to Butler 21 yds

1 & 10 (36) up tempo DM run +9 yds
2 & 1 (45) up tempo bubble screen 1 yd pass to Jones, Jones breaks one tackle runs 54 yds for the TD.
PAT: Connor Assalley got the the first kicking attempt of the season and connected on the PAT.

Kempt: 3 of 3, 76 yds, TD
Jones: 2 catches, 55 yds, TD
Butler: 1 catch, 21 yds, big 1st down on 3rd and 12 to keep TD drive alive, moved Offense into up tempo mode immediately after their first, 1st down conversion.
Montgomery: 2 carries, 7 yds, at least 2 broken tackles.
Lima: 1 tackle

I'm going to try to cram a game's worth of analysis into this single play.
  • Interesting formation, no receivers to the left side of the field.
  • SDSU d-backs giving at least 6 yard cushion to Butler/Eaton/Jones, practically daring ISU to go horizontal
  • Previous 9 yard yard run by DM set up play action and horizontal passing game.
  • Nice, criss-crossing blocking concept on the screen to give Eaton and Butler good blocking angles on the SDSU d-backs.
  • Well-executed blocks by Eaton and Butler to put Jones 1x1 vs SDSU safety, who takes a bad tackling angle
  • Really like Eaton driving his guy to the turf
  • Jones leaves 'em running in syrup

I sent an email to Cyclones.com, we will see what they say. There was someone that had a copy of the game, but he has not uploaded it to CF, as far as I know. Maybe he can't without getting in trouble.

I can summarize it for you. God, mercilessly, saved ISU from another embarrassment on the field of play. Maybe if it can happen all season ISU will go undefeated.
